The Sherbrooke Fusilier Regiment was a Canadian armoured regiment attached to the 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade which landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day in support of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division and then fought through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany until VE-Day. As an independent armoured regiment, it was assigned to support various infantry formations. As such, it fought the first major tank battle on European soil when it went up against the panzers and panzergrenadiers of the 12.SS-Panzerdivision (Hitlerjugend) on 7 June 1944. Its tanks entered Caen on 9 July and then took part in the advance to and the clearing of the town of Falaise. From there, the regiment pursued the retreating German forces towards the Seine River at Rouen. In a subsequent book, the author will explore the regiment's battles through Antwerp, the Scheldt, the Rhine River and the Hochwald Gap.

In this volume, the author explores the regiment's battles through Antwerp, the Scheldt, the Rhine River and the Hochwald Gap in Germany. One remarkable Sherman tank of the regiment - BOMB - would survive from D-Day to VE-Day.

Dissipative Quantum Chaos and Decoherence provides an overview of the state of the art of research in this exciting field. The main emphasis is on the development of a semiclassical formalism that allows one to incorporate the effect of dissipation and decoherence in a precise, yet tractable way into the quantum mechanics of classically chaotic systems. The formalism is employed to reveal how the spectrum of the quantum mechanical propagator of a density matrix is determined by the spectrum of the corresponding classical propagator of phase space density. Simple quantum--classical hybrid formulae for experimentally relevant correlation functions and time-dependent expectation values of observables are derived. The problem of decoherence is treated in detail, and highly unexpected cases of very slow decoherence are revealed, with important consequences for the long-debated realizability of Schrödinger cat states as well as for the construction of quantum computers.

This book unearths a forgotten history of exchange and enlightenment between China and the West, told through vivid examples drawn from the world of poetry, the philosophy of culture and religion, and the realm of international communication. Across chapters that cover an extraordinary range of cultural terrain, from an examination of the parallel expatriate experiences of the British critic and poet William Empson and the Chinese writer Xu Zhimo, to a study of the influence of Christian thought on the evolution of Confucianism, authors Li Zhimin and Daniel Braun rethink the contemporary paradigm of western hegemony and international division that shapes our senses and studies of the East and the West alike, in order to present an image of modern China that is richly hybrid in its blend of cultures, histories, and traditions. This book is immersed in the cultures and literary traditions of China and the West, and written for specialists of the regions and general interest readers alike.
