While the it-narrative, the thing-poem and thing theatre have been around for some time, the essay – which is often considered literature’s fourth genre – is still lacking its thing-subgenre. Yet, particularly British and Anglo-Irish literature display a long, albeit so far implicit tradition of texts that can be categorised as ‘thing-essays’: Starting with Jonathan Swift’s “Meditation upon a Broomstick” (1701) and continuing until today, these texts draw broader insights from the contemplation of a material item of daily life. This book provides the first theoretical conceptualisation of this genre. Bringing elements from essay studies and the New Materialisms together, it shows why the essay lends itself particularly well to literarisations of the personal relationships that people foster to everyday objects. While the idiosyncrasies of each essay show the versatility of thing-essays, the study also seeks to unearth changing attitudes towards things – and thus towards people’s material surroundings in general – throughout time. In order to account for such synchronic and diachronic differences in thing-essays, this study develops a typology of three modes via which things can be approached essayistically. In the book’s second part, this framework will be employed in close readings and historicisations of 14 thing-essays from 1701 until 2021. Ranging from satire to sentimental writing, from religion to consumerism, from class to gender differences, from feelings of nationality to exoticism, from the French Revolution to Freud and from art to everyday life, the stylistic and thematic broadness of these thing-essays ultimately shows the multifarious connections between human life and materiality.

Industrielle Informationssysteme), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Literaturarbeit soll einen Uberblick uber Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien (IKT) geben, indem eine Ubersicht uber traditionelle IKTs erstellt wird, deren Verbreitung erlautert wird, ihre Schwachen sowie Erfolge besprochen werden und abschlieend innovative Prototypen fur die zukunftige Entwicklung vorgestellt werden. Aus den Ergebnissen dieser Literaturarbeit kann eine Strategie zur optimalen Bewaltigung einer Katastrophe durch IKT abgeleitet werden. Gerade durch die einerseits steigende Anzahl der Katastrophen und andererseits der fortschreitenden Technologie konnen Katastrophen durch fortgeschrittene IKT zu weniger Verlusten von Menschen sowie Schaden der Infrastruktur fuhren. Insbesondere neue Technologien wie Kunstliche Intelligenz, smarte Gerate oder auch die Anbindung zur Cloud versprechen viele Verbesserung in der Katastrophenbewaltigung. Diese neuen Entwicklungen konnen die IKT verandern und Schwachen aus der Vergangenheit abfangen oder komplett vergessen machen. In dieser Arbeit wird in Kapitel 2 zuerst ein Verstandnis uber den Begriff einer Naturkatastrophe und ein Informations- und Kommunikationssystem vermittelt. Zudem wird der aktuelle Stand der Katastrophensysteme abgebildet. In Kapitel 3 werden die Forschungsmethodik dieser Literaturanalyse und die Vorgehensweise erlautert. Zudem werden die Forschungsfragen dieser Arbeit vorgestellt. Die Kommunikationsmoglichkeiten werden in Kapitel 4 vorgestellt. Die genutzten Technologien zur Kommunikation werden herausgearbeitet und mit deren markanten Eigenschaften, Starken und Schwachen vorgestellt. Um die Tauglichkeit der Systeme im Allgemeinen zu betrachten, werden in Kapitel 5 die Schwachen der Informations- und Kommunikationssysteme in der Vergangenheit betrachtet. In Kapitel 6 werden Technologien vorgestellt, die aktuell nur als Prototypen vereinzelt eingesetzt oder erst in der Zukunft einsatzfahig werden. Diese Technologien konnten dazu beitragen, die in Kapitel 5 dargestellten Schwachen, partiell aufzufangen oder systematisch zu minimieren. In Kapitel 7 folgt eine Schlussbetrachtung mit einer kritischen Diskussion, den Limitationen dieser Arbeit und Implikationen fur weitere Forschungen.
