Tropical Fern Biology and Evolution is the first reference to focus on this important tropical flora. While other resources highlight the plants of temperate regions, this book focuses specifically on those of the tropics, where important insights have been discovered about phylogenetic relationship between several pteridophyte and lycophyte phylogeny, ecology and physiology. Ferns and lycophytes are vital elements of tropical ecosystems. They thrive in various environments, from the shaded, humid floors of terrestrial forests to the canopy, where epiphytic species have adapted to harsh ecological conditions. In regions of the tropics that have been impacted by human activity, ferns are crucial for colonizing extensive areas and preventing soil erosion. However, they can also hinder forest regeneration in certain contexts. Gaining insight into the structure, growth, and effects of these plants is essential for tackling the challenges and leveraging the benefits they present. Based on the latest research, Tropical Fern Biology and Evolution discusses their traits and community assemblies in the humid tropics and presents potential application uses for their phylogenetic information. Students and researchers will find this foundational information valuable as both an introductory guide to these tropical ferns and their characteristics, and as inspiration for further research and development of their potential in addressing environmental issues.Explores how Pteridophyte and Lycophyte species can contribute to forest restoration and conservationFocuses on tropical regions where the diversity of these vascular plants is highly concentrated but poorly knownIncludes strong evolutionary ecology components, providing insights for use in a tropical context
