The Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) has exerted a profound influence not only on twentieth century linguistics but on a whole range of disciplines within the humanities and social sciences. His central thesis was that the primary object in studying a language is the state of that language at a particular time - a so-called synchronic study. He went on to claim that a language state is a socially constituted system of signs that are quite arbitrary and that can only be defined in terms of their relationship within the system. This new perspective has changed the way people think about linguistics and has led to important attempts to apply structuralist ideas in anthropology, literary criticism, and philosophy. Professor Holdcroft's book expounds and elaborates Saussure's central ideas. It also offers a critical assessment of them, arguing that many of Saussure's claims are either questionable or have been misunderstood.

Saint-Cast and Neighbours, 1939-45: Occupation, Resistance and Liberation offers a vivid, localised history of the Second World War as experienced in Saint-Cast, a seaside town in Brittany, and its neighbouring communes. The narrative begins with the shock of occupation in 1940, as German forces imposed strict controls, requisitioned property, and enforced harsh rationing. Initially, the population complied with the occupiers, but as privations deepened and German demands increased, resentment grew.By 1942, the seeds of resistance had taken root. Local networks, often formed by ordinary citizens, began clandestine activities: forging documents, sheltering escapees, and sabotaging German operations. The book details the formation and evolution of these groups, including their links to larger intelligence and resistance networks such as F2 and the British-backed SOE’s VAR line. These networks played a crucial role in gathering intelligence, aiding Allied airmen, and preparing for liberation. The narrative climaxes with the events of 1944, as the local resistance, bolstered by Allied support and arms drops, coordinated sabotage and direct action to support the advancing American Third Army. Saint-Cast became a focal point for liberation efforts, culminating in the successful expulsion of German forces and the restoration of local governance.Holdcroft’s account is enriched by personal testimonies, official reports, and local anecdotes, highlighting both the courage and suffering of the community. The book concludes by reflecting on the aftermath: the challenges of rebuilding, the reckoning with collaborators, and the enduring legacy of resistance in shaping post-war France.
