Accounting has an ever-increasing significance in contemporary society. Indeed, some argue that its practices are fundamental to the development and functioning of modern capitalist societies. We can see accounting everywhere: in organizations where budgeting, investing, costing, and performance appraisal rely on accounting practices; in financial and other audits; in corporate scandals and financial reporting and regulation; in corporate governance, risk management, and accountability, and in the corresponding growth and influence of the accounting profession. Accounting, too, is an important part of the curriculum and research of business and management schools, the fastest growing sector in higher education. This growth is largely a phenomenon of the last 50 years or so. Prior to that, accounting was seen mainly as a mundane, technical, bookkeeping exercise (and some still share that naive view). The growth in accounting has demanded a corresponding engagement by scholars to examine and highlight the important behavioural, organizational, institutional, and social dimensions of accounting. Pioneering work by accounting researchers and social scientists more generally has persuasively demonstrated to a wider social science, professional, management, and policy audience how many aspects of life are indeed constituted, to animportant extent, through the calculative practices of accounting.Anthony Hopwood, to whom this book is dedicated, has been a leading figure in this endeavour, which has effectively defined accounting as a distinctive field of research in the social sciences. The book brings together the work of leading international accounting academics and social scientists, and demonstrates the scope, vitality, and insights of contemporary scholarship in and on accounting and auditing.

The moors don't just hold the dead. They keep the secrets of the living. For decades, the name of the couple who turned the moors into a tomb has haunted every doorway in the valley. The nightmare of Brady and Hindley was supposed to be a closed chapter, a tragedy etched into history and left to rot under the heather. But the earth is not a fortress. As the peat shifts, it reveals what was never meant to be uncovered — a small, intimate, and agonizingly preserved piece of a life that was stolen. It is not a crime scene for a detective to solve, but a final, shattering confrontation for those who have spent a lifetime trying to look away. The silence that has protected this valley for sixty years is about to shatter. The past is no longer content to stay buried. It is rising to the surface, and it is demanding a reckoning that no one is prepared to survive. Some secrets are buried. Some are just waiting.

Jake Thomas came to Wales looking for a story. He found one that refused to let him leave. With a crushing deadline and an empty page waiting for him, the successful novelist takes a wrong turn on a lonely country road and stumbles across a remote inn. There he hears a chilling tale about an abandoned house on a nearby hill — a place the locals avoid and speak of only in whispers. According to legend, anyone who enters the house is never seen again.Jake visits the house out of curiosity. What he finds inside is unsettling, but he leaves convinced the stories are nothing more than superstition. Then, on the drive back to the inn, his car skids off the road and plunges into a ravine. When Jake opens his eyes, he is back inside the house. The doors are locked. The rooms seem to change when he is not looking. Shadows move in the corners, and unseen voices know things they should not know. No matter how hard he tries, he cannot escape. And sometimes the dead are the last to know.
