This is a study of the relationship between capitalism and Christianity in twentieth-century Britain. David Jeremy examines the collective biographies of three business élites in order to explore issues important to business and religion. How did the churches shape the thinking of future business leaders? What impact did Christianity have on big business? How has the participation of business people in religious life affected the major Protestant denominations? David Jeremy traces the development of business values in a formally Christian society; he shows how churchmen among business leaders related their faith to their business and the dilemmas this could entail; and he uncovers the varying parts played by businessmen from personal involvement in their local congregation to funding and organizing major denominations, or an interdenominational venture like the 1954 Billy Graham Crusade to London.Using a wide range of sources, including newspapers and journals, unpublished records, and interviews, Dr Jeremy has produced a thought-provoking analysis of a relationship that can be both tense and fruitful. His insights into the private faith and business ethics of leading entrepreneurs and businessmen are underpinned by intensive quantitative analysis. Capitalists and Christians is an invaluable study of the intertwining of two vital strands in twentieth-century British history.

This important volume illustrates the diversity of scholarship which has been directed towards understanding the complex process of technology transfer in its business context. The first part considers the theory and process of technology transfer as developed by economists, sociologists and historians. The remainder of the volume presents essays and excerpts on the agencies of technology transfer: artisans and professionals, the state, private business and multinational enterprise. The papers range from the eighteenth century to the present and cover industries from coal and textiles to computers and motor vehicles, in countries as diverse as Britain, the US, Japan, South Korea and India.

Tillfälligt slut
Business history has developed as an academic subject since the 1970s. Drawing on recent research and debate, this text plainly outlines the history of major aspects of business behaviour in 20th-century Britain, presuming little prior knowledge of history, business, or economics on the student's part. The text is organized in three sections: the business environment; business organization; and entrepreneurship and management. The first section outlines the changes that have most powerfully affected business, including global political and economic developments, and technological changes. The second section deals with business structures and strategies, merger waves, multinationals and small firms. Special attention is given to the role of the City of London and the financial sector, and also to the revolution in retailing. The third part of the text examines the social origins, education, and training of business leaders and evaluates the performance of British management with respect to research and development, labour relations, and marketing. The last two chapters are about the shaping of company culture and business ethics.Common to all the chapters are: the chapter's objectives; an outline of chapter contents; a concluding list of points the student should have learned; discussion questions; and a guide to further reading.
