The popular belief that a scientific understanding of reality is incompatible with a Christian one is simply wrong. Some Christian understandings of reality do conflict with some scientific understandings. But a thoroughly rational Christian understanding of the origin and history of the universe will be informed by the best scientific theories and the "facts" founded on them. This book weaves a narrative of the origin and history of the universe from the perspective of contemporary science with a Christian understanding of God and of God''s role in the origin and history of the universe. At the center of this integrated narrative is the view that God, who is pure, unbounded Love, is Creator: the zest for life in the universe comes from God, and God is the source of Truth, Beauty, and Goodness in the universe. God is amazed and delighted at what God-and-the-world has created; God is saddened by ways creatures have fallen short of pure, unbounded Love, Truth, Beauty, and Goodness; and God''s pure, unbounded Love keeps on trying to persuade all creatures toward Truth, Beauty, and Goodness.

An investigation of the term pneuma in Paul's letter to the Galations is needed from the side of NT scholarship, because debate continues over the question about the nature of the crisis in the churches of Galatia and, therefore, about the historical occasion of Paul's statements about the Spirit. The focus of this debate is the character of Paul's opponents in the Galatian churches. Currently, the consensus is limited to a single point: that someone was engaging in a circumcizing campaign in the Galatian churches. But on the other points no agreement exists. The two parts of this study are distinguished in that the first part deals with the historical context of Paul's statements about the Spirit in Galatians: that is, the events because of which Paul wrote the letter, and the nature and social setting of expriences of the Spirit in the life of the Galatian churches. The second part deals with the theology of the Spirit in Paul's message to the Galatians, which has three aspects-soteriology, christology, and eschatology. -from the Introduction

How can one preach effectively on the death of Jesus to a world jaded by stories of suffering and violence? This exegetical book -- written collectively by six authorities on Scripture -- sheds new light on the tremendous power of preaching to challenge and enlarge the world of the listeners. By probing the accounts of Jesus' death in the Gospel of Mark and in Paul's letters, 'Biblical Preaching on the Death of Jesus' uncovers a vision of divine power and justice that calls us to become partners in God's struggle to overcome suffering and injustice in the world. In the cross, the authors demonstrate, we as Christians are given a symbol of both weakness and defeat and of power and victor. This symbol is a magnificent reminder of the redemption and transformation of lives and situations through Christ's identification with suffering. With unusual success, the six authors have written the entire book as a group undertaking. The result is a testimony to the interrelatedness that is central to the vision of process theology. 'Biblical Preaching on the Death of Jesus' will be of immense help to preachers and to students and scholars of New Testament interpretation and systematic theology.
