Kulturelle Fremdheitserfahrungen waren gerade auch in der Frühen Neuzeit prominente Themen, da sich in dieser Zeit die Grenzen des Erreichbaren und des Erfahrbaren stark ausweiteten. Dieses Fremde stellte das Selbstverständnis in Frage und musste gedeutet und eingeordnet werden. Oft erlaubt die Art und Weise, wie Reisen beschrieben wurden, tieferen Einblick in die Ausgangskultur als in die beschriebenen Phänomene. Im Gegensatz zu Prosatexten sind lyrische Darstellungen der Fremde bislang kaum untersucht worden. Vor dem Hintergrund lyrik- und epochentheoretischer Überlegungen wertet und vergleicht David Kröll systematisch die Darstellungen des Fremden durch den spätmittelalterlichen Autor Oswald von Wolkenstein (um 1377–1445) und den Barockdichter Paul Fleming (1609–1640). Im Zuge dessen findet er Antworten auf die Fragen, warum auch in der Lyrik narrative Techniken eine entscheidende Bedeutung haben, warum die Biografie der beiden vielgereisten Autoren eine zentrale Rolle dabei spielt und warum beide seit Jahrhunderten als besonders ''modern'' und ''neuzeitlich'' wahrgenommen werden.
