Small islands often enjoy a distinct juridical personality. Many, whether fully sovereign or not, successfully deploy this "gift of jurisdiction" to economic advantage, offsetting the potentially adverse effects of smallness, isolation and peripherality. These legal powers, reflected in supportive policy and culture, are themselves key economic resources in a development strategy. Globalization can be richly asymmetrical, offering lucrative opportunities for differentiation and nice strategies for small island jurisdictions. This book documents such lessons from a most unlikely group of North Atlantic Islands.

Derek Milne presents a practical introduction to the psychology of mental health nursing for student nurses and qualified staff. The book is structured to reflect a problem-solving approach to mental health nursing. The recurring theme is that the major challenges of nursing can be reduced to manageable steps by the use of a systematic strategy. The four main elements of the approach form the basis of the book, namely assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Each chapter is supplemented by case study material and exercises which both illustrate the theory and provide an opportunity for readers to test some of it out for themselves. The result is a blend of theory, research and practical guidelines, intended to provide some basic guidance but more importantly to foster an educated 'thinking' approach.

They all share some measure of autonomous government, and are easily construed as independent states-in-waiting. Yet, most of these territories exhibit no urgency to become independent. Instead, they appear to have decided that there are political and economic benefits accruing today when island territories are autonomous but not sovereign. In an uncertain world, a substantial degree of autonomy, respect and protection for local culture and identity, reasonable provision of employment opportunities, welfare and security by a larger and benign metropolitan state, have collectively weakened most local thrusts for independence. In spite of the mandate of the United Nations Committee on Decolonisation, there is a strong case to be made today for non-sovereignty, and it is the SNIJs that provide clear evidence.
