This volume contains many of the lectures delivered at the AMS Summer Research Institute on Algebraic Geometry held at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in July 1995. The aim of the conference was to provide a comprehensive view of the development of algebraic geometry in the past decade and to lay special emphasis on emerging new directions. The focus of the papers in these volumes is on expository surveys of important areas rather than on technical presentations of new results. This volume contains the proceedings of the conference String-Math 2012, which was held July 16-21, 2012, at the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics, Universitat Bonn. This was the second in a series of annual large meetings devoted to the interface of mathematics and string theory. These meetings have rapidly become the flagship conferences in the field. Topics include super Riemann surfaces and their super moduli, generalized moonshine and K3 surfaces, the latest developments in supersymmetric and topological field theory, localization techniques, applications to knot theory, and many more. This volume is no longer available. Over the last four decades, Phillip Griffiths has been a central figure in mathematics. During this time, he made crucial contributions in several fields, including complex analysis, algebraic geometry, and differential systems.
