Between 1880 and 1920, Muslim Sufi orders became pillars of the colonial regimes and economies of Senegal and Mauritania. In Paths of Accommodation, David Robinson examines the ways in which the leaders of the orders negotiated relations with the Federation of French West Africa in order to preserve autonomy within the religious, social, and economic realms while abandoning the political sphere to their non-Muslim rulers.This was a striking development because the local inhabitants had a strong sense of belonging to the Dar al-Islam, the "world of Islam" in which Muslims ruled themselves.Drawing from a wide variety of archival, oral, and Arabic sources, Robinson describes the important roles played by Muslim merchants and the mulatto community of St. Louis, Senegal. This volume, continuing the series of great medieval bishops' registers, offers material valuable for both religious and social history.The register of Archbishop William Melton is one of the largest and most comprehensive to survive. Its backbone is the institution of clergy and licences to them, papal provisions and ordination of vicars and chantries, but it also contains a wealth of material for social history. During the period it covers, the East Riding of Yorkshire was flourishing, and a number of entries in the register reflect the challenges which the newly-founded town of Kingstonupon Hull was causing for the existing parochial structure. The archbishop is shown anathematizing malefactors who stole his swans and invaded his liberties in Beverley and the river Hull, and demanding the return of stolen woolon behalf of a merchant whose ship had been wrecked in the river Humber. The register also covers the origins of one of the last monasteries to be founded in medieval England, Haltemprice, and reveals the shortcomings of monks andnuns as well as secular clergy and members of the laity; more widely, many entries reflect the tensions between outlying vills and chapelries and their mother churches.The text is presented here with introduction, apparatus, and notes which elucidate the entries.David Robinson, until his retirement County Archivist of Surrey, was awarded his PhD from the University of Cambridge.

A rare window onto the financial, political and administrative power of an archbishop operating at the heart of royal government in early fourteenth-century England.William Melton acquired extensive financial skill and experience in the service of Edward II. When he became Archbishop of York in 1317 he applied these abilities in his new role. After a difficult period in his early years he became able to make considerable loans to the crown, his fellow bishops and northern nobility, gentry and religious houses.The intrinseca camere section of Melton's register covers his financial transactions and documents his dealings with his agents in London, notably the merchant Simon Swanland and Peruzzi bankers based there with the aim of acquiring gold florins for payments to the curia at the most favourable rates of exchange. Entries relate to the re-establishment of the archbishop's Mint and to household and estate procurement. It is important for business and financial historians and reveals aspects of episcopal activity that normally are found neither in the registers nor the estate records of the episcopate. The volume also covers the war with Scotland and reflects the resultant transfer of government departments to York. Entries relate to an attempt to raise forces against Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer's invasion in 1326 and to Melton's funding of the great West window of York minster.
