This book highlights the latest advances, innovations, and applications in the field of LCA in pavements, bridges, and roadways, as presented by leading international researchers at the 6th International Symposium on Pavement, Roadway, and Bridge Life Cycle Assessment (ISPRB LCA2024), held in Arlington, VA, USA, on June 6–8, 2024. It covers a diverse range of topics concerning assessment of environmental impacts of pavements, bridges, and roadways, including environmental product declarations (EPDs) and use of life cycle assessment (LCA) in design, data, and case studies: LCA methodologies for transportation infrastructure, durability and service life assessments, maintenance strategies to enhance performance and minimize environmental impacts, evaluating the environmental impacts of materials and construction, recycling and reuse of materials, carbonation of concrete, pavement vehicle interaction, life cycle thinking in climate change planning, and climate change mitigation. The contributions, which were selected by means of a rigorous international peer-review process, present a wealth of exciting ideas that will open novel research directions and foster new multidisciplinary collaborations.

This volume highlights the latest advances, innovations, and applications in biomaterials for road pavements, as presented by leading international researchers and engineers at the 2nd International Workshop on the Use of Biomaterials in Pavements, held in São Paulo, Brazil on September 23-24, 2024. It covers a diverse range of topics concerning the roadmap for biomaterial integration in road materials, including: bio-based binders and additives, recycled biomass and waste materials, environmental impact and sustainability assessment, recyclability and circular economy, testing methods and performance evaluation. The contributions, which were selected by means of a rigorous international peer-review process, present a wealth of exciting ideas that will open novel research directions and foster new multidisciplinary collaborations.

Le Smart Road sono infrastrutture stradali di nuova generazione munite di specifiche tecnologie per monitorare e regolamentare i flussi di traffico in tempo reale, informare gli utenti ed offrire loro servizi mirati a migliorare il comfort e la sicurezza del viaggio. Grazie all’ecosistema tecnologico proprio delle Smart Road, generato da sensori, apparecchiature di telecomunicazione, big data, software, algoritmi di intelligenza artificiale e veicoli innovativi, si possono perseguire i seguenti principali obiettivi: analizzare continuativamente nel tempo lo stato di efficienza delle “opere d’arte” minori (muri di sostegno, paratie, ecc.), maggiori (ponti, viadotti, gallerie, ecc.) e delle sovrastrutture stradali, anche nell’ottica di poter attuare una ottimale manutenzione programmata;favorire l’interoperabilità tra l’infrastruttura fisica ed i veicoli di nuova generazione, in particolare quelli a guida autonoma. Nel volume sono consegnati alcuni criteri metodologici per la progettazione, il monitoraggio e la manutenzione delle Smart Road. Vengono esaminati i riferimenti normativi sulle Smart Road e sui veicoli a guida autonoma ed affrontati i temi riguardanti la progettazione geometrica, i modelli di stima della capacità e dei livelli di servizio, il Dominio di Progettazione Operativa (ODD) dei sistemi avanzati di assistenza alla guida (ADAS) per il mantenimento in corsia dei veicoli, gli strumenti di gestione informativa digitale BIM delle Smart Road, l’uso di sensori nelle pavimentazioni, i sistemi di ricarica dei veicoli elettrici del tipo “Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer”, i dati di traffico “FCD” e quelli satellitari per il monitoraggio delle Smart Road, le tecniche di gestione dell’infrastruttura e della sovrastruttura in condizioni ambientali avverse.   In definitiva, il libro è di specifico interesse per gli studenti universitari e per i professionisti che a vario titolo operano nel campo dell’Ingegneria Stradale.
