This volume offers a rich and accessible introduction to contemporary research on Buddhist ethical thought for interested students and scholars, yet also offers chapters taking up more technical philosophical and textual topics. A Mirror is For Reflection offers a snapshot of the present state of academic investigation into the nature of Buddhist Ethics, including contributions from many of the leading figures in the academic study of Buddhist philosophy. Over the past decade many scholars have come to think that the project of fitting Buddhist ethical thought into Western philosophical categories may be of limited utility, and the focus of investigation has shifted in a number of new directions. This volume includes contemporary perspectives on topics including the nature of Buddhist ethics as a whole, karma and rebirth, mindfulness, narrative, intention, free will, politics, anger, and equanimity.

Transforming Urban Transport brings into focus the origins and implementation pathways of significant urban transport innovations that have recently been adopted in major, democratically governed world cities that are seeking to advance sustainability aims. It documents how proponents of new transportation initiatives confronted a range of administrative, environmental, fiscal, and political obstacles by using a range of leadership skills, technical resources, and negotiation capacities to move a good idea from the drawing board to implementation. The book's eight case studies focus on cities of great interest across the globe--Los Angeles, Mexico City, New York, Paris, San Francisco, Seoul, Stockholm, and Vienna--many of which are known for significant mayor leadership and efforts to rescale power from the nation to the city. The cases highlight innovations likely to be of interest to transport policy makers from all corners, such as strengthening public transportation services, vehicle and traffic management measures, repurposing roads and other urban spaces away from their initial function as vehicle travel corridors, and turning sidewalks and city streets into more pedestrian-friendly places for walking, cycling, and leisure. Aside from their transformative impacts in transportation terms, many of the policy innovations examined here have altered planning institutions, public-private sector relations, civil society commitments, and governance mandates in the course of implementation. In bringing these cases to the fore, Transforming Urban Transport advances understanding of the conditions under which policy interventions can expand institutional capacities and governance mandates, particularly linked to urban sustainability. As such, it is an essential contribution to larger debates about what it takes to make cities more environmentally sustainable and the types of strategies and tactics that best advance progress on these fronts in both the short- and the long-term.

In this anthology, Sheridan Johns and Hunt Davis, two widely respected scholars of South Africa, address the many questions raised by the country's anti-apartheid struggle by focusing on the writings and speeches of Mandela, Tambo, and the ANC. The work consists of over 45 historic documents, which outline ANC goals and priorities, accompanied by lengthy introductions by the editors. These introductions provide a history of the ANC, examine the organization's prominent role in the evolution of a South African nationalist movement, and consider the organization's role in the future of this troubled land.

This is an anthology of readings on the subject of pragmatics - the study of actual utterances or 'speaker's intended meaning'. Pragmatics is relevant to a variety of disciplines and specializations, including linguistics, poetics, the philosophy of language, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and psychology. Davis's collection brings together the most important literature on pragmatics, including classic papers as well as the work of the best contemporary theorists. The selections are organized according to such topics as conversational implicature and relevance, speaker reference, indexicals, presupposition, direct and indirect speech acts, and non-literal uses of language. Informal and philosophical, rather than formal or technical, approaches to pragmatics are emphasized.

Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Venetian workers and tradesmen would gather on a Sunday or holiday afternoon to battle with their fists or with sticks for possession of a bridge. Known as the "little battles on the bridges", these encounters enjoyed enough popularity to generate their own literature of poems, prose and etchings and were superbly chronicled over forty years by an anonymous source fortuitously discovered by the author. From these materials, and in the fashion of cultural historians such as Robert Darnton and Carlo Ginsburg, Robert Davis offers an analysis of these battles as examples of "deep play" that reveal otherwise hidden cultural traits about individual and collective honor, and the social structure of seventeenth century Venetian plebeian society. He argues that workers devoted themselves to these bloody, near archic battles as a means of reacting to the centralization of civic power and civic ritual in the hands of the aristocracy. The author's unique material enables him to offer startling evidence on a range of civic and cultural issues. He demonstrates why bridges were the obvious locations in aquatic Venice for the public display of youthful virility. He also looks at the organization of the fighting and argues that the bridge battles over time moved away from mass popular melees into organized versions of early-modern sport. The public celebrations that followed victory at the bridge also throw light on the nature and intensity of civic festival in seventeenth century Vencie. And, most interesting of all, Davis argues that the authorities' inability to control a popular event that it declared illegal over fifty times in a period of two hundered years is evidence of the chronic practical limits of state power and of elites wtihdrawing from involvement with the popular world. This novel work will be of interest to scholars and students of early modern Europe, Renaissance history, popular culture, labor history, and urban studies.

Is the Internet destined to upset traditional political power in the United States? This book answers with an emphatic "no." Author Richard Davis shows how current political players including candidates, public officials, and the media are adapting to the Internet and assuring that this new medium benefits them in their struggle for power. In doing so he examines the current function of the Internet in democratic politics--educating citizens, conducting electoral campaigns, gauging public opinion, and achieving policy resolution-- and the roles of current political actors in those functions. Davis's unconventional prediction concerning the Internet's impact on American politics warrants a closer look by anyone interested in learning how this new communication medium will affect us politically.

In this selection of published articles in the area of semantics, Steven Davis and Brendan Gillon try to obtain a representative coverage of topics, approaches, and recognized authors; while choosing articles which have made an important contribution to the field and are accessible to students as well as scholars. The volume will have appeal as a textbook for upper level courses and as a reference for scholars of linguistics, phonology, and philosophy of language. Semantics: A Reader may serve as a companion to Davis's: Pragmatics: A Reader.

Campaigning Online provides an authoritative new portrait of the role of campaign web sites in American elections. How do candidates use the Internet to gain or reinforce voter support? Are voters influenced by what they see on candidate's web sites? Do they learn anything? Are their votes influenced? The authors answer these questions using a wealth of new data and evidence about the 2000 election drawn from national and state-wide surveys, laboratory experiments, interviews with campaign staff, and analysis of web sites themselves.

This interdisciplinary study follows an international and ecumenical meeting of twenty-one scholars held in New York at Easter 2003: the Redemption Summit. After an opening chapter, which explores seven central questions for writers on redemption, five chapters are dedicated to the scriptural roots of the doctrine. A section on the patristic and medieval periods then examines the interpretation of redemption through the centuries. The volume moves on to foundational and systematic issues: the problem of horrendous evil, karma and grace, and differing views on justification. Studies on the redemption in literature, art, music, and preaching form the final part. There is a fruitful dialogue between experts in a wide range of areas and the international reputation of the participants reflects and guarantees the high quality of this joint work. The result is a well researched, skilfully argued, and, at times, provocative volume on the central Christian belief: the redemption of human beings through Jesus Christ.

The use of animal, including human, cell culture has expanded enormously during the last 25 years, with new applications appearing all the time. The aim of this book is to guide the newcomer progressively through all those areas which nowadays are basic to the performance of cell culture. The book should also prove useful to the experienced worker when entering a new field, setting up a new laboratory, or as a source of reference on basic techniques.Revised and updated chapters cover topics such as equipping a cell culture laboratory, sterilization, culture media, basic culture technique, cell cloning, the isolation of new cell lines, contamination procedures, and good laboratory practice. There is a brand new chapter on the microscopy of living cells, and an appendix of online resources for cell biology.

The creative industries are a growing economic as well as cultural force. This book investigates their organizational dynamics and shows how companies structure their work processes to incorporate creative employees' needs for autonomy while at the same time controlling and coordinating their output. Research in television and radio broadcasting, publishing, advertising, the recorded music industry and the performing arts is used to show the variety of ways in which organizations respond to the creative imperative. The authors help to answer a larger question which has been neglected in theories of management and organizational behaviour, namely: what should replace the management principles and practices inherited from industrial society in the types of organization which predominate in post-industrial society? The arguments and evidence are made accessible to a multidisciplinary audience of students and researchers with an interest in the study of organizations as well as to managers in the creative industries.

A scientific investigation and personal adventure story about zombis and the voudoun culture of Haiti by a Harvard scientist. In April 1982, ethnobotanist Wade Davis arrived in Haiti to investigate two documented cases of zombis—people who had reappeared in Haitian society years after they had been officially declared dead and had been buried. Drawn into a netherworld of rituals and celebrations, Davis penetrated the vodoun mystique deeply enough to place zombification in its proper context within vodoun culture. In the course of his investigation, Davis came to realize that the story of vodoun is the history of Haiti—from the African origins of its people to the successful Haitian independence movement, down to the present day, where vodoun culture is, in effect, the government of Haiti’s countryside. The Serpent and the Rainbow combines anthropological investigation with a remarkable personal adventure to illuminate and finally explain a phenomenon that has long fascinated Americans.

In The Lives of the Ninth-Century Popes the translator and commentator continues from the year AD 817, reached in his The Lives of the Eighth-Century Popes (Liverpool, 1992), and deals with the remaining ten biographies of the Liber pontificalis down to AD 886, when compilation ceased. The volume thus completes the translation, begun in The Book of Pontiffs (Liverpool, 1989), the first translation into any modern language apart from continuations written from the late eleventh century onwards.
