Impromptu Speaking, Second Edition provides a time-saving method and a guide for the type of speech anyone might make. The book, in particular, covers how to make short speeches in a conversational way.Organized into four chapters, the book begins with an explanation of confidence in speechmaking. The role that sense of humor plays in a speech is also addressed. Subsequent chapter elucidates the five-point plan, which corresponds to the fingers and thumb of one hand. In studying the plan, no. 1 (little finger) always refers to the occasion, and no. 5 (thumb) always refers to the purpose of it. Then, with practice, notes are written against 2, 3, and 4 only. In the last chapter, plans and examples are given. This book will be helpful to anyone who will make an impromptu speech.

The Search for Sanity provides a comprehensive discussion of the issue of mental illness. The book begins by addressing the question of whether society is sick. This is followed by separate chapters on the social aspects of mental health; the problems caused by sex such as prostitution, sexually transmitted disease, and illegitimate births; how the quest for power can destroy people; and ways people try to escape from reality, including drug use and alcohol consumption. Subsequent chapters cover the treatment for mental illness, how treatment helps, hospital care, and ways the community can help. The final chapter deals with the promotion of mental health and prevention of mental illness.

The Trade Unions—What Are They? is a primer of the trade union movement in Britain and examines the convolutions of industrial negotiations as well as the intricacies that have to be unraveled by those handling the problems—whether of the application of the Incomes and Prices policy or of restrictive practices. This book traces the history of British trade unions and presents the biographies of five great trade union leaders of the past. Four famous trade-union cases are also highlighted, along with some important events and statistics. This monograph is comprised of 13 chapters and begins with a brief historical account of trade unions in Britain before presenting biographical sketches of five great union leaders: Tom Mann, John Burns, Ben Tillett, Will Thorne, and Ernest Bevin. The next section examines four famous trade union cases: the Tolpuddle Martyrs, the Taff Vale case, the Osborne Verdict, and Rookes vs. Barnard. The remaining chapters discuss some major events and statistics relating to the British trade union movement from the 14th to the 20th centuries, including laws, prices and incomes, the enactment of the Ordinance and Statute of Labourers in 1349 and 1351, and the strike staged by signalmen of the Taff Vale Railway in 1901. This text will be of interest to trade union officers and members as well as industry and government officials.
