Phosphorus compounds play a leading role in several major industries and an auxiliary role in many others. They are components of adhesives, cosmetics, detergents, foods, fertilizers, flame retardants, fluorescent lamps, matches, medicines, paints, pesticides, plastics, rust-proofing compositions, semiconductors, and many other industrial materials. This book summarizes the key features of phosphorus chemistry, biochemistry, and technology. Providing a comprehensive, well-organized, and effective resource for scientists and engineers working with phosphorus, it includes topics such as oxyphosphorus compounds, carbophosphorus compounds, azaphosphorus compounds, and metallophosphorus compounds.

Over two decades have passed since the fifth edition of Phosphorus: Chemistry, Biochemistry and Technology. Major advances in chemistry, materials science, electronics, and medicine have expanded and clarified the role of phosphorus in both our everyday appliances and groundbreaking research. Significantly expanded, updated, and reorganized, this sixth edition organizes and explains vital phosphorus research and relevant information available in highly specialized reviews and references on select related topics. An authoritative and comprehensive review of phosphorus chemistry and related technology, Phosphorus: Chemistry, Biochemistry and Technology covers historical, academic, industrial, agricultural, military, biological, and medical aspects of phosphorous. Furthermore, it offers a starting point for more extended studies of the highly specialized branches of phosphorus chemistry.Although this book deals with a small fraction of the > 106 known phosphorus compounds, it thoroughly covers the simpler derivatives and most key compounds of economic, sociological, and biological importance. Extensively updated and expanded with tables, figures, equations, structural formulae, and references, it is ideal for scientists in related fields seeking a rapid introduction to phosphorus chemistry.

Studies in Inorganic Chemistry 2, Phosphorus: An Outline of Its Chemistry, Biochemistry and Technology, Second Edition deals with the organic, inorganic, biochemical, physical, environmental, and technical aspects of phosphorus chemistry. This book is composed of 11 chapters and starts with a brief background of phosphorus with the recognition of three major allotropic modifications of elemental phosphorus. The chemical composition of phosphorus is analyzed as containing either three, four, five, or six oxygen atoms linked to a central phosphorus atom. Simple phosphorus nitrides and other related compounds are also dealt with, including compounds with P-NH2 linkages, P-NF2 linkages, and amides with P-N and P-C linkages. One kind of orthophosphate esters is analyzed, because it is numerous, involved in many life processes, and has various applications in industry and the sciences. Phosphorus sulfur compounds, polyphosphines, ring compounds, and high polymers are also described. This book further discusses the production through the combination of phosphine with borane that gives rise to more varieties of possible phosphorus-boron hydrides, and then explains the simplest but a hypothetical compound known as H2b-Ph2. Attention is also given to the preparation and study of metal-coordination compounds, of which the P atom retains at least an approximate tetrahedral bond configuration. Finally, the chemical methods for the detection and estimation of phosphorus in a compound are explained, where a prior oxidation and/or hydrolysis should first be considered. This text is intended for university undergraduate levels in the discipline of general chemistry. This book can also be a useful reference for research workers and technologists dealing with phosphorus chemistry.

Phosphorus: An Outline of Its Chemistry, Biochemistry and Technology, Third Edition discusses aspects of phosphorus chemistry: organic, inorganic, biochemical, physical, environmental, and technical. This book continues to deal with both basic material and highlights from the previous two editions; it also includes a new chapter (Chapter 11) devoted exclusively to biochemistry. Further discussions on the element has been included in the appendices that cover the literature and nomenclature of phosphorus compounds; hazards of common phosphorus compounds; properties of white phosphorus, phosphine PH3, and orthophosphoric acid; composition of strong phosphoric acids; solutions; composition of phosphate buffer solutions; and atomic data for the elements. This text is intended for students with a reasonable knowledge of general chemistry to acquire the necessary groundwork before undertaking detailed searching of the literature or reading highly specialized reviews. This edition also serves as a reference text and guide to advanced study for research workers and technologists with interests in related fields.
