Hugo Blanc is Peru’s best-known revolutionary.A leader of the indigenous people of the Andes, he was born in 1934 in Cusco, the former Inca capital. He is a lifelong environmental campaigner in defence of the natural riches of the Andean region and beyond.In the 1960s he led a successful armed peasant uprising demanding land rights. Hugo Blanco är en av de mest kända latinamerikanska revolutionärerna i vår tid. Hugo Blancos liv har varit dramatiskt. Som bondeledare i Peru räddades han i slutet av 60-talet, genom internationella protester, undan dödsstraff. Med svenske ambassadören Harald Edelstams hjälp kom han till Sverige, räddad undan militärkuppen i Chile 1973, och stannade några år. Med tiden har han engagerat sig allt djupare för urfolken och mot plundring av naturresurser, miljöförstöring och klimatkris. Hugo Blanco har också blivit en viktig person i svensk vänster- och solidaritetsrörelsehistoria. Amnesty Internationals svenska sektion utsåg honom till årets fånge 1968 och deltog i den internationella kampanjen för hans frigivande. Då han kom till Sverige från Pinochets Chile talade han på solidaritetsmöten om lärdomarna av kuppen och nödvändigheten av solidaritet. Den brittiske författaren Derek Wall beskriver Hugo Blancos dramatiska liv och följer hans politiska utveckling i riktning mot urfolks- och miljökamp i den här boken. Wall har varit varit ledande företrädare för Gröna partiet i England och Wales, bland annat som dess internationella samordnare. Han kallar sig idag för ekosocialist och antikapitalist och har skrivit böcker på det temat, bl a Babylon and beyond: The economics of anti-capitalist, anti-globalist, and radical green movements (2005) och The rise of the green left: Inside the worldwide, ecosocialist movement (2010). Wall skriver: ”Hugo Blanco har haft två revolutionära liv – både som engagerad marxist inspirerad av Lenin och Trotskij och som radikal ledare för ursprungsfolk.” Men Wall visar också på en kontinuitet mellan de två liven i Hugo Blancos förhållningssätt, där han oavsett vilken strid han deltagit i betonat betydelsen av beslutsam, kompromisslös kamp och av att utveckla strategiskt tänkande. Likaså har han ständigt avvisat tanken på självutnämnda ledarskap för massrörelserna. I varje kamp han deltagit i har han själv varit praktiskt involverad och förklarat att man måste lyssna och utgå från de berördas behov och krav. Boken innehåller berättelser som riskerar att falla i glömska om 1900-talets latinamerikanska kamp mot imperialism och militärdiktaturer. Men den samlar också mängder av små lärdomar från den dagliga kampen, lärdomar som dragits av en man som ständigt sökt nya vägar att stärka motståndet mot mäktiga fiender. Lärdomar som Hugo själv i ett citat i boken beskriver som det mest intressanta med hans liv. Den svenska utgåvan innehåller också ett efterord av Hugos dotter Carmen Blanco Valer som bor i Sverige sedan 1975. Hon ger en bild av hur Hugo omsatte sina lärdomar även i relationen till sin dotter, hur han på ett praktiskt sätt gav exempel i uthållighet, solidaritet och jämställdhet, i uppmärksammande av klass- och urfolksförtryck även i Sverige, i att vara öppen för förändringar och påverkan från nya generationer. Hon beskriver också hur urfolkskampen påverkat hennes egen världsbild och politiska åskådning.
