NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR The New York Times • People • Vogue • Financial Times • Sunday Telegraph • Chicago Sun-Times • The Independent • Bookreporter • The Sunday Business Post An intimate memoir from one of America's most acclaimed and beloved actresses.Best known for her role as Annie Hall in Woody Allen's film of the same name, for which she won an Academy Award, Diane Keaton had a highly successful career with performances in The Godfather, Reds, Father of the Bride, Something’s Gotta Give and many more. This is the fascinating story of her rise to fame, her relationships with notable talents such as Woody Allen, Al Pacino and Warren Beatty, and her struggle with bulimia. But to write about herself, Diane realised she had to write about her mother too, and how their bond came to define both of their lives. The result is an unflinching and remarkably detailed portrait of Dorothy Hall – a woman restless with intellectual and creative energy, struggling to find an outlet for her talents – as well as her entire family, recounting a story that spans four generations and nearly a hundred years.A brilliant insight into the life of a legendary actress, Then Again is also a touching, funny and unforgettable exploration of family and the bonds that forever tie us to those we love the most.

California Romantica features the most important, yet rarely seen, residential exemplars of the California Mission and Spanish Colonial styles, by such noted architects as George Washington Smith, Wallace Neff, Richard Requa, Lilian Rice, and Paul R. Williams, among others. From whitewashed stucco walls and cloistered patios to tile roofs and sumptuous gardens, each house shown is a rare masterpiece, splendidly appointed with authentic Monterey furniture, California tile, and Navajo rugs. Among the magnificent seaside estates, canyon villas, and courtyard bungalows shown is Diane Keaton s former home in Beverly Hills, which she thoughtfully restored with noted designer Stephen Shadley, and for which she has been recognized as a committed preservationist. She brings her cinematic eye, a keen sense of natural drama, and a profound appreciation for the nuances of shadow and light to the elucidation of these buildings, through the selection of specially commissioned photography. Authoritative text by D. J. Waldie lucidly explicates the architecture and provides an intimate tour of a historic and distinctly Californian lifestyle.

Designer extraordinaire Stephen Shadley began his working life as a scenic artist at 20th Century Fox. Throughout a celebrated career (landing a coveted spot on the AD100), his work has been marked continually by the glamour of Hollywood as well as by a kind of visual storytelling that is richly informed by the world of the movie screen and by the artifice and allure of film s great cinematographers. Notable for their expression of an exquisite sense of style, his designed homes including the interiors for a classic Beverly Hills abode for Diane Keaton, an apartment for Robert Altman in the legendary Pythian building on New York s Upper West Side, as well as a luxurious contemporary home for Jennifer Aniston are all expressions of a masterful sense of scale and an appreciation for understated beauty and refined materials that are ultimately warm, inviting, and serene. The book features numerous beautifully designed homes of Hollywood royalty, primarily in Southern California, though with notable projects in New York and beyond, as well as three greenrooms, which Shadley designed for the Oscars and the Emmy Awards.

A visual autobiography of a kind as only Diane Keaton could tell it, via the celebrated star s idiosyncratic and personal collections and ruminative texts, Savedoffers an unprecedented glimpse into the mind of the legendary film star. The book begins with an homage to movies curiously, to old b grade horror flicks, such as Attack of the Puppet People a passion that manifests in a collection of rare film stills showing large-brain aliens with crablike hands and terrified men with eyes growing from their shoulders. In a second chapter or collection, the reader encoun-ters Cracked, a startling selection of crinkled and neglected negatives: found portraits that speak of the past through the broken lens of time. Even more intimately revealing are photographs taken by the star herself, be they of pigeons while on downtime from the set of Reds in London or of the greeters of Hollywood Boulevard, caught at the other end of her Rolleiflex camera lens, now revealed as the seen, the experienced, the remembered, the cherished. But this is only the beginning, the surface of a very deep dive into the wellsprings of one of the great creative talents at work today. The book is an invitation to dive in.

“A hymn to unsolved mysteries discovered in the dead of night” –Diane KeatonActress Diane Keaton’s fascination with the photographs of county coroner Robert H. Boltz began when a car crashed into a telephone pole outside her grandmother’s house, killing both occupants. Between the 1960s and the 1980s, it was Boltz’s responsibility to document these accidents, which mostly occurred at night. Now the owner of Boltz’s photographic archive, Keaton curates a selection of 32 duotone images alongside Los Angeles-based photographer Nick Reid. With “a richness similar to that of 1930s black-and-white crime films”, Boltz’s photographs depict the skeletal and gruesome automobile wrecks, without any trace of those who were involved. The absence of any sign of life, Keaton writes, is “a haunting reminder of the couple who died outside Grammy Keaton’s home all those many years ago.”Diane Keaton (born 1946) is an American actress best known for her roles in The Godfather Trilogy and Annie Hall, the latter of which earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1977. She has received three additional Academy Award nominations, two Emmy nominations and 12 Golden Globe nominations. In 2017 she received the American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award.
