For decades, tuberculosis in Buenos Aires was more than a dangerous bacillus. It was also an anxious state of mind shaped not only by fears of contagion and death but also by broader social and cultural concerns. These worries included changing work routines, rapid urban growth and its consequences for housing and living conditions, efforts to build a healthy “national race,” and shifting notions of normality and pathology. In The Ailing City, the historian Diego Armus explores the metaphors, state policies, and experiences associated with tuberculosis in Buenos Aires between 1870 and 1950. During those years, the disease was conspicuous and frightening, and biomedicine was unable to offer an effective cure. Against the background of the global history of tuberculosis, Armus focuses on the making and consolidation of medicalized urban life in the Argentine capital. He discusses the state’s intrusion into private lives and the ways that those suffering from the disease accommodated and resisted official attempts to care for them and to reform and control their morality, sociability, sexuality, and daily habits. Es un modo de ejercitar el cuerpo, un producto de consumo masivo, un espectáculo, un negocio, un tema de conversación, un tópico literario y mediático, un fenómeno global, un modo de control social, una expresión popular mas o menos autónoma, un maleable recurso en la articulación de identidades sociales, étnico-raciales, nacionales y de género… Del football al fútbol/futebol: historias argentinas, brasileras y uruguayas en el siglo XX estudia la popularización y criollización del football, su transformación en fútbol en Argentina y Uruguay, y en futebol en Brasil, su consolidación como deporte profesional y de masas, y como espectáculo y fuente de perdurables pasiones.

Al otro lado del cuerpo: estudios biopolíticos en América Latina es el resultado de una iniciativa surgida hace unos años con el propósito de reunir perspectivas históricas críticas, analíticas y genealógicas sobre la relación entre la historia de las ciencias, el saber médico y diversas prácticas de poder. Al concebir esta compilación tuvimos en mente varias ideas. Una de ellas fue reunir avances de investigaciones hechas en América Latina que exploraran aspectos significativos en la región: los principios de la diferencia, su gestión, el control de poblaciones y las formas de vincularlos como fenómenos biopolíticos. El segundo objetivo fue contar con un conjunto de trabajos que propusieran perspectivas sobre transformaciones, inflexiones y continuidades nacionales y regionales entre el siglo xvi y el presente. En 1925, el diario La Nación señalaba que la Madre María "ofrecía a todos, ricos y pobres, lo que la ciencia no puede ofrecer y la religión se niega a dar". Si bien desde el siglo xviii la medicina comenzó a delimitar su objeto de estudio y buscó oficializarse, no siempre logró desplazar a las artes de curar, prácticas y saberes interesados en brindar algún tipo de cura y atención a las dolencias de las personas.¿Qué ocurre cuando las instituciones del sistema de salud son insuficientes o inaccesibles, o cuando la gente desconfía de ellas? ¿Qué sucede fuera de esos ámbitos? ¿Qué hacer con malestares y enfermedades frente a los cuales la medicina diplomada no logra articular respuestas efectivas?Diego Armus reúne aquí una serie de ensayos que muestra que quienes practican las artes de curar han participado desde hace siglos en las trayectorias terapéuticas de personas ricas y pobres, instruidas o no, poderosas o desvalidas.
