This volume relates to a comparative research of historical developments and structures in North Central Europe, which is directed to the exploration of an early medieval design of this historical region beyond the Roman Empire’s culture frontier. One point of the editorial concern thus was building bridges to overcome long existing dividing lines built up by divergent perspectives of previous scientific traditions. In addition, the recent come back of national histories and historiographies call for a scrutiny on the suitability of postulated ethnicities for the postsocialist nation building process. As a result, the collected papers – presented partly in English, partly in German – have a critical look into various influences, responsible for the realization of images of the past as of scientific strategies.

In Managing Frontiers in Qing China, historians and anthropologists explore China's imperial expansion in Inner Asia, focusing on early Qing empire-building in Mongolia, Xinjiang, Tibet, and beyond – Central Asian perspectives and comparisons to Russia's Asian empire are included. Taking an institutional-historical and historical-anthropological approach, the essays engage with two Qing agencies well-known for their governance of non-Han groups: the Lifanyuan and Libu.This volume offers a comprehensive overview of the Lifanyuan and Libu, revising and assessing the state of affairs in the under-researched field of these two institutions. The contributors explore the imperial policies towards and the shifting classifications of minority groups in the Qing Empire, explicitly pairing and comparing the Lifanyuan and Libu as in some sense cognate agencies. Die Beziehungen zwischen Staaten werden von einer Vielzahl gesellschaftlicher Akteure beeinflusst, darunter auch von ethnischen Diaspora. Dieser Band befasst sich mit den russischen Diaspora in Moldova und der Ukraine in der Zeit von 1992 bis 1998. Konnten sie Impulse zwischen ihrem jeweiligen Residenzstaat und Russland vermitteln? Wirkten sie als integrierender Faktor – oder waren sie gar die «fünfte Kolonne» Moskaus? Wie wurde das Verhältnis zwischen Russland und Moldova bzw. Russland und der Ukraine durch die russischen Diaspora beeinflusst? Auf der Grundlage eines systematischen Analyserahmens transnationaler Beziehungen ethnischer Diaspora werden diese Fragen in vergleichender Perspektive untersucht.

Dieses Buch gliedert sich in zwei Hauptteile. Der erste ist den theoretischen Voraussetzungen gewidmet, die in Forschungen zum Frühen Mittelalter Anwendung finden sollen. Diese Konzeptionen erleichtern das Verständnis der Prozesse im nordöstlichen Teil des Kontinents zwischen dem Zerfall jenes Europa, das von der militärischen und wirtschaftlichen Macht des Römischen Kaiserreichs dominiert war, und dem Entstehen eines durch die universalistische Idee des Christentums ‘vereinten’ Europa. Der zweite Teil enthält Texte, die den Nutzen des anthropologischen Ansatzes bei der Darstellung ausgewählter Probleme demonstrieren sollen. Diese stehen im Zusammenhang mit der Herausbildung der geopolitischen Struktur, die den expansiven Staat unter der Führung der polnischen Dynastie der Piasten prägten. Dabei handelt es sich natürlich nur um eine Auswahl, die jedoch die ertragreichen Möglichkeiten aufzeigt, die sich aus der theoretischen Bereicherung des historischen Forschungsapparats ergeben.

Das Buch beinhaltet eine Sammlung von 156 burjatischen Folkloretexten (Rätsel, Sprüche und Lieder) im Original und mit Übersetzung. Die Textsammlung wurde vom Autor in Russland und der Mongolei im Rahmen von mehrjährigen Feldstudien (2001-2004 und Sommer 2005) durchgeführt. Die Folklore stammt von Chori-, Echirit-Bulagat- und Selenga-Burjaten aus Aga, Ust’-Orda, der Republik Burjatien, den Ajmaks Dornod, Chövsgöl und Töv sowie von Rückwanderern aus der Inneren Mongolei. Eine Einführung zur Kultur und Wirtschaft der Burjaten sowie ein Textkommentar vervollständigen die Sammlung. Anhand des «kollektiven Gedächtnisses», das die zeitgenössischen Texte darstellen, wird der Versuch unternommen – teilweise im Vergleich mit älterer Folklore – Nomadismustraditionen und den Wandel zur Sesshaftigkeit zu dokumentieren.
