We live in the age of the retouchable selfie. For those navigating the world of social media, the issue of how one presents oneself to the world has never been more critical. Psychological studies have shown the high impact of this selfie culture on the mental health of young people especially. How might the long tradition of the Christian gaze, found in scripture, art, theology and philosophy speak into this selfie generation? What, in this context, might be the significance of the doctrine of humankind’s creation in God’s image, or of the incarnation? On a more practical level, how might the monastic tradition of the ‘chaste gaze’ challenge or reinforce the selfie-culture?Putting such theological and ethical questions into dialogue with psychological studies and philosophical understandings, the book offers an important pastoral and scholarly resource for anyone seeking to understand theologically one of the most profound developments of the digital age.

Did Christianity once teach secret knowledge? Dominic White argues that the early Church in fact taught a wonderful wisdom about the cosmos. Christian cosmology offers resources for us to speak to many of the problems, questions, and issues we face both in the church and in society. It does not provide instant answers; rather, it is in some ways more like the parables of Jesus, stories that challenge our view of the world and invite us to reflection and contemplation. This “lost knowledge” sheds new light on many biblical teachings and areas of controversy within Christianity: the meaning of repentance; the mystery of the cross; Jesus’ ascent through the heavens; angels and stars; the body and the feminine; justice and ecology; and liturgy, art, music, and dance. The Lost Knowledge of Christ shares the cosmic, psychological, and artistic focus of today’s nonreligious spiritualities and offers some surprising responses. Images, music, and videos that correspond with the chapters can be found at lostknowledgeofchrist.wordpress.com.

More than fifty years after the liturgical reform, tensions remain in the Catholic Church over the Old and New Rites – tensions that theologians and liturgists have not been able to resolve. Following Pope Francis’s calls to liturgical unity and synodal listening, in 2022 the Centre for Ecclesial Ethics at the Margaret Beaufort Institute of Theology in Cambridge held the ‘Views from the Pews’ webinar to ask lay Catholics for their experiences. Which form of the Roman Rite do they prefer and why? Theologians were then asked to respond. Here we publish a rich conversation of liturgical reconciliation: the testimonies, the theologians’ responses and summaries of the ensuing discussions with our lay participants, which provide often-surprising resources for liturgical reconciliation, especially in the area of liturgical anthropology. The story is brought up to date with a review of more recent church documents and a reflection on the challenges and opportunities for liturgical reconciliation afforded by new currents in the Church and in society.
