Physical Chemistry: An Advanced Treatise, Volume IV: Molecular Properties provides the aspects of the properties of single molecules and physical methods available for their determination. This book discusses linear polyatomic molecules, quantum-mechanical theory of vibrations, spectra of organic molecules, production and detection of free radicals, and force constants and molecular structure. The Hund''s coupling cases for diatomic molecules, methods of measuring dipole moments, NMR spectra, and ESR spectra of organic species are also elaborated. This publication likewise covers the applications of the Mössbauer effect, electric deflection experiments, and effects of intramolecular motions on diffraction patterns. This volume is intended for graduate and physical chemistry students interested in molecular properties.

Physical Chemistry: An Advanced Treatise: Mathematical Methods, Volume XIA, is devoted to mathematical techniques of interest to chemists. The purpose of this treatise is to present a comprehensive treatment of physical chemistry for advanced students and investigators in a reasonably small number of volumes. An attempt has been made to include all important topics in physical chemistry together with borderline subjects which are of particular interest and importance. The book begins with discussions of elementary concepts such as linear vector spaces; generalized function theory; complex variable theory; boundary-value problems; approximating functions and their applications in numerical differentiation, integration, and the solution of differential equations; and group theory. These are followed by more advanced and specialized chapters that emphasize chemical applications rather than mathematical rigor. This book provides the student of physical chemistry with a basic understanding of those additional mathematical techniques which are important in chemistry and should enable him to read the current literature in theoretical chemistry.

Physical Chemistry: An Advanced Treatise, Volume XIB: Mathematical Methods focuses on mathematical techniques that consist of concepts relating to differentiation and integration. This book discusses the methods in lattice statistics, Pfaffian solution of the planar Ising problem, and probability theory and stochastic processes. The random variables and probability distributions, non-equilibrium problems, Brownian motion, and scattering theory are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the elastic scattering from atoms, solution of integral and differential equations, concepts in graph theory, and theory of operator equations. This volume provides graduate and physical chemistry students a basic understanding of mathematical techniques important in chemistry.

Physical Chemistry: An Advanced Treatise: Liquid State, Volume VIIIB, deals with simple liquids because the theory is most developed for these liquids. The purpose of this treatise is to present a comprehensive treatment of physical chemistry for advanced students and investigators in a reasonably small number of volumes. An attempt has been made to include all important topics in physical chemistry together with borderline subjects which are of particular interest and importance. The book contains five chapters and begins with a discussion of various theories of mixtures, focusing on binary mixtures of simple, spherical molecules. This is followed by separate chapters on the properties of liquid helium; time-dependent correlation functions; theory of static critical phenomena; and progress in understanding the behavior of transport coefficients near the liquid-gas critical point.

Physical Chemistry: An Advanced Treatise: Liquid State, Volume VIIIA, deals with simple liquids because the theory is most developed for these liquids. The purpose of this treatise is to present a comprehensive treatment of physical chemistry for advanced students and investigators in a reasonably small number of volumes. An attempt has been made to include all important topics in physical chemistry together with borderline subjects which are of particular interest and importance. The book contains six chapters and begins with an introduction to intermolecular pair potential-energy functions, the principle of corresponding states, and the equation of state for dense liquids. It then discusses the static and dynamic structure of liquids, followed by separate chapters on the four main techniques in the theory of liquids: simulation studies, integral equation methods, lattice theories, and perturbation theories.

Recently there have been profound developments in the understanding and interpretation of liquids and soft matter centered on constituents with sho- range interactions. Ionic soft matter is a class of conventional condensed soft matter with prevailing contribution from electrostatics and, therefore, can be subject to possible long-range correlations among the components of the - terial and in many cases crucially affecting its physical properties. Among the most popular representatives of such a class of materials are natural and synthetic saline environments, like aqueous and non-aqueous electrolyte - lutions and molten salts as well as variety of polyelectrolytes and colloidal suspensions. Equally well known are biological systems of proteins. All these systems are examples of soft matter strongly in?uenced, if not dominated, by long-range forces. For more than half of century the classical theories by Debye and Hückel as well as by Derjaguin, Landau, Verwey and Owerbeek (DLVO) have been at the basis of theoretical physical chemistry and chemical engineering. The substantial progress in material science during last few decades as well as the advent of new instrumentation and computational techniques made it apparent that in many cases the classical theories break down. New types of interactions (e.g. hydrodynamic, entropic) have been discovered and a number of questions have arisen from theoretical and experimental studies. Many of these questions still do not have de?nite answers.

Traditionally, non-quantum physics has been concerned with deterministic equations where the dynamics of the system are completely determined by initial conditions. A century ago the discovery of Brownian motion showed that nature need not be deterministic. However, it is only recently that there has been broad interest in nondeterministic and even chaotic systems, not only in physics but in ecology and economics. On a short term basis, the stock market is nondeterministic and often chaotic. Despite its significance, there are few books available that introduce the reader to modern ideas in stochastic systems. This book provides an introduction to this increasingly important field and includes a number of interesting applications.
