Finite Element Methods are used for numerous engineering applications where numerical solutions of partial differential equations are needed. As computers can now deal with the millions of parameters used in these methods, automatic error estimation and automatic adaptation of the utilised method (according to this error estimation), has become a hot research topic.This text offers comprehensive coverage of this new field of automatic adaptation and error estimation, bringing together the work of eight outstanding researchers in this field who have completed a six year national research project within the German Science Foundation. The result is a state-of-the-art work in true reference style. Each chapter is self-contained and covers theoretical, algorithmic and software presentations as well as solved problems. During the last decades modelling of inelastic structural behaviour has achieved great attention. Wherever elastic designhas reached its limita sa consequence of increased loading, the related cons titutive rela tions meanwhile have become part of the engineer's practice. However, new materials with complex behaviour, further increasing loads at higher temperatures, as well as the implementation of stronger security demands have led to theconsequence that the preferentially used phenomenological concepts need to be verified and improved continuously. Caused by the a priori non linear character oft he material rela tions, all equations fort he description of every new phenomenon need to be reconsidered. According to this, since about a decade the idea succeeds that constitutive relations which represent material behaviour more re alistically can not only be deduced phe nomenologicallyfrom the laws of continuum mechanics. Sincet he observed behaviour is caused by processes taking place on the microscale, these processes and mechanisms need to be taken into consideration when determining the constitutive relations.The formulation of proper micro macro relations actu ally is one of the main emphases in thermoplasticity in the international research. Rethinking Productive Development examines the market failures impeding transformation and the government failures that may make the policy remedies worse than the market illness. To address market failures, the authors propose a simple conceptual framework based on the scope and nature of the policy approach. They then systematically analyze country policies through this lens in key areas such as innovation, new firms, financing, human capital, and internationalization to show the power of this way of thinking. Still, the book warns that policymakers cannot be sure what the right policy interventions are and must set up a process to discover them that calls for public-private collaboration. Recognizing that the risk of capture needs to be checked and that even the best policies will fail without the technical, organizational, and political capacity to implement them, thebook concludes with ideas on how to design institutions fostering the right incentives and how to grow public sector capabilities over time.

This course with 6 lecturers intends to present a systematic survey of recent re­ search results of well-known scientists on error-controlled adaptive finite element methods in solid and structural mechanics with emphasis to problem-dependent concepts for adaptivity, error analysis as well as h- and p-adaptive refinement techniques including meshing and remeshing. Challenging applications are of equal importance, including elastic and elastoplastic deformations of solids, con­ tact problems and thin-walled structures. Some major topics should be pointed out, namely: (i) The growing importance of goal-oriented and local error estimates for quan­ tities of interest—in comparison with global error estimates—based on dual finite element solutions; (a) The importance of the p-version of the finite element method in conjunction with parameter-dependent hierarchical approximations of the mathematical model, for example in boundary layers of elastic plates; (Hi) The choice of problem-oriented error measures in suitable norms, consider­ ing residual, averaging and hierarchical error estimates in conjunction with the efficiency of the associated adaptive computations; (iv) The importance of implicit local postprocessing with enhanced test spaces in order to get constant-free, i. e. absolute-not only relative-discretizati- error estimates; (v) The coupling of error-controlled adaptive discretizations and the mathemat­ ical modeling in related subdomains, such as boundary layers. The main goals of adaptivity are reliability and efficiency, combined with in­ sight and access to controls which are independent of the applied discretization methods. By these efforts, new paradigms in Computational Mechanics should be realized, namely verifications and even validations ofengineering models.

Traditional FEM and the more recent BEM underlie many engineering computational methods and corresponding software. Both methods have their merits and also their limitations. The combination of both methods will provide an improved numerical tool in the future. The aim of this book is to present significant basic formulations of FEM and BEM and to show their common practical and mathematical foundations, their differences and possibilities for their combination. These include variational foundations, FEM and BEM for linear and non-linear elasticity and potential problems, the combination of FEM-BEM asymptotic error analysis, modifications due to corner and crack singularities and corresponding improvement of convergence, plastic analysis, numerical algorithms and engineering applications.

Five main topics of computational plasticity are treated by experts in the field with latest research results, such as consistent linearizations and finite element techniques, the numerical analysis for stable volume-preserving time-integration at the plastic flow rule, the analysis and finite-element computation of shearband localizations and also of shake-down load factors for arbitrary non-linear kinematic hardening materials. The aim was primarily an integrated representation of the mathematical models, the analysis of numerical methods and the newest algorithms for the consistent and stable computation of large dimensional systems. The significance should be seen in the collection of textbook-like treatments of important new results from wellknown scientists.

With the rap1d development of computational capab1lities, nonl1near f1nite element analys1s 1n structural mechan1CS has become an 1mportant field of research. Its objective is the real1stic assessment of the actual behaV10r of structures by numerical methods. Th1S requires that all nonlinear effects, such as the nonl1near character1stics of the mater1al and large deformations be taken 1nto account. The act1vities in th1S f1eld be1ng worldw1de, d1rect 1nteraction between the various research groups 1S necessary to coordinate future research and to overcome the time gap between the generat10n of new results and the1r appearance 1n the 11terature. The f1rst U.S.-Germany Sympos1um was held 1n 1976 at the Massachusetts Inst1tute of Technology. Under the general to- P1C "Formulat1ons and Computat1onal Algorithms in Fin1te Ele- ment Analysis" 1t prov1ded an opportun1ty for about 20 re- searchers from each country to present lectures, hold discus- sions, and establ1sh mutual contacts. The success of th1S first sympos1um was so encourag1ng that 1t seemed natural to organ- 1ze a second bilateral meet1ng, this time 1n Germany, and to 1nv1te researchers from other European countr1es as well.
