Este libro es un intento de observar de nuevo el Movimiento Moderno y volver a enmarcarlo segun unos criterios mas amplios. A diferencia de las historias canonicas de la arquitectura moderna, este libro exalta la profundidad y complejidad de ese movimiento, y resalta no tanto sus propositos comunes como su espiritu explorador y la consiguiente diversidad creativa. En este estudio se intenta tambien hacer una aproximacion mas cercana a los edificios, pues muchas historias del pasado-al concentrarse en los estilos y los periodos, y en la historia de la cultura en general- han mencionado los edificios solo de pasada. Esto hace que el enfoque de este libro sea diferente y que tenga ademas un marcado caracter didactico, pues el libro va dirigido fundamentalmente a los estudiantes de arquitectura. Para ellos se ha adoptado el metodo del "e;estudio de modelos"e; o casos concretos (case studies), de manera que cada uno de los capitulos que componen el libro esta dedicado monograficamente a un ejemplo singular; la excepcion es el primer capitulo, que examina todo el conjunto de la colonia Weissnhof, como muestra de la variedad de enfoques entre los arquitectos modernos. La singularidad del libro esta en la seleccion de los modelos, pues aunque se incluyen obras maestras indiscutibles (como la Bauhaus o la villa Saboya), tambien aparecen ejemplos menos habituales (como la hacienda Garkau, de Hugo Haring, o los hangares aeronauticos, de Pier Luigi Nervi), a los que se unen edificios ya desaparecidos (como los almacenes Schocken, de Erich Mendelsohn). Y es que el autor quiere reivindicar el estudio de la obra Mendelsohn y de Bruno Taut porque, pese a ser dos arquitectos muy influyentes en su epoca, luego fueron relegados al olvido. La singularidad del enfoque se confirma en la obra elegida de Frank Lloyd Wright:una de las multiples "e;casas usonianas"e;, mucho menos coonocidas que su celebre Casa de la Cascada.
