This innovative work offers the first comprehensive transcultural history of historiography. The contributors transcend a Eurocentric approach not only in terms of the individual historiographies they assess, but also in the methodologies they use for comparative analysis. Moving beyond the traditional national focus of historiography, the book offers a genuinely comparative consideration of the commonalities and differences in writing history. Distinguishing among distinct cultural identities, the contributors consider the ways and means of intellectual transfers and assess the strength of local historiographical traditions as they are challenged from outside. The essays explore the question of the utility and the limits of conceptions of modernism that apply Western theories of development to non-Western cultures. Warning against the dominant tendency in recent historiographies of non-Western societies to define these predominantly in relation to Western thought, the authors show the extent to which indigenous traditions have been overlooked. The key question is how the triad of industrialization, modernization, and the historicization process, which was decisive in the development of modern academic historiography, also is valid beyond Europe. Illustrating just how deeply suffused history writing is with European models, the book offers a broad theoretical platform for exploring the value and necessity of a world historiography beyond Eurocentrism.

The history of education in the modern world is a history of transnational and cross-cultural influence. This collection explores those influences in (post) colonial and indigenous education across different geographical contexts. The authors emphasize how local actors constructed their own adaptation of colonialism, identity, and autonomy, creating a multi-centric and entangled history of modern education. Textbook revision and research have historically been two of the central pillars of the work of the Georg Eckert Institute, and remain so today. The history of the Institute demonstrates just how intertwined they are. Against this backdrop, the development of the Institute is presented and critically examined from different perspectives, using a broad range of source materials. The book pays particular attention to the collection of textbooks for the humanities and social sciences, which has been important from the beginning and is now the largest in the world. Das Georg-Eckert-Institut wurde 1975 durch das Land Niedersachsen mit dem Auftrag gegründet, internationale Schulbuchforschung durchzuführen und Empfehlungen für Bildungspolitik und Verlage zu erarbeiten. Seine Geschichte begann allerdings schon 1951, als Georg Eckert an der Kant-Hochschule in Braunschweig das Internationale Institut für Schulbuchverbesserung ins Leben rief, um damit einen Beitrag zur internationalen Verständigung zu leisten. Von Anfang an bildete dafür die Schulbuchbibliothek die zentrale Grundlage. Heute umfasst die Forschungsbibliothek des GEI die weltweit größte internationale Sammlung von geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Lehr- und Lernmaterialien.Das Buch, das hier in 2., überarbeiteter Auflage vorliegt, zeigt, was das GEI für die Schulbuchrevision geleistet hat und wie es maßgeblich zur Entwicklung der Schulbuch- und Bildungsmedienforschung beigetragen hat. Dieses wissenschaftliche Feld nimmt in der Gegenwart neben Schulbüchern auch digitale Bildungsmedien und die Methoden ihrer Erforschung in den Blick.

The Georg Eckert Institute was established by the federal state of Lower Saxony in 1975 with a mandate to carry out international research into textbooks and to develop recommendations for education policy-makers and publishing houses. The history of the Institute, however, can be traced back to 1951, when Georg Eckert founded the International Institute for Textbook Improvement at the Kant Teacher Training College in Braunschweig, with the aim of strengthening international understanding. The textbook library was at the core of this work from the outset. The research library at the GEI today contains the world's largest international collection of textbooks and teaching materials for humanities and social studies subjects. The book, now in its second, revised edition, illustrates the contributions made by the GEI to textbook revision and how it has contributed fundamentally to the development of textbook and educational media research. This is an academic field that not only focusses on textbooks but also on digital educational media and the methods used to research them.
