Gegenstand der zweiten, völlig neu bearbeiteten Auflage ist die menschliche Kompetenz-in-der-Performanz, sich in der Komplexität des Sprachgebrauchs zu orientieren und zu einer Verständigung zu gelangen. Die Trennung zweier Ebenen von Kompetenz und Performanz wird damit überwunden. Grundlegend ist ein dialogischer Sprachbegriff, der sprachliches Handeln als interaktives Handeln versteht, das auf Wahrscheinlichkeitsprinzipien beruht. Bezugspunkt ist der Mensch, der mit anderen Menschen Zwecke und Interessen im Handlungsspiel aushandelt und dabei nicht nur sprachliche, sondern auch perzeptive und kognitive Fähigkeiten einsetzt. Im Rahmen einer funktionalen dialogischen Sprechakttaxonomie werden systematisch Basishandlungen, abgeleitete Handlungen und Untermuster unterschieden und jeweils in ihrer Interrelation aus Aktion und Reaktion beschrieben. Die Frage der Zuordnung von Funktion und Äußerung wird zunächst allgemein-theoretisch behandelt und sodann in einer kommunikativen Grammatik des Deutschen systematisch mit einer Fülle von Äußerungen für direkte, indirekte und idiomatische Sprechakte untersucht. Die Trennung von Satzgrammatik und Pragmatik ist in einer Äußerungsgrammatik zu überwinden. Während die Erstauflage die Zuordnung von Funktion und Äußerung über ein geschlossenes System von Konventionen erklärte, ist es Ziel der Neubearbeitung, die dialogische Kompetenz als komplexe, adaptive und integrative Fähigkeit des Menschen in der Performanz zu erfassen.
