Mijn leven en dat van alle andere mensen en natuurlijk alle leven begon bij de oerknal, althans dat is de huidige hypothese. Het leven evolueerde in een periode van 3,5 miljard jaar tot een veelheid aan veelzijdige organismen waarvan de mens, Homo sapiens er een was. Tijdens die evolutie zijn er 5 periodes geweest waarbij telkens meer dan 75% van alle organismen uitstierven als gevolg van extreem vulkanisme, inslagen van meteorieten of onbekende oorzaken. De ontwikkeling daarna volgde telkens een geheel andere wending. Op grote schaal is dit te zien op basis van fossielen, maar op veel kleinere schaal worden we constant geconfronteerd met toevallige veranderingen die grote wendingen tot gevolg hebben. In de geschiedenis en huidige maatschappij zijn daar vele voorbeelden van. Ieder kan in zijn eigen leven ook die voorbeelden vinden hoe kleine veranderingen tot grote wijzigingen in je leven hebben geleid. Zelf geef ik een aantal voorbeelden waarbij een alledaags toeval leidt tot levensveranderende omstandigheid.
