Los dibujos de las cuevas de Altamira y los signos que aparecen en una página web tienen algo en común. Ambos revelan la intención de representar un conjunto de significados externamente y sobre un espacio gráfico. Es éste, sin lugar a dudas, uno de los logros más espectaculares de la mente humana: la construcción de sistemas de signos externos capaces de representar cosas tan diferentes como objetos, escenas, trayectos, acontecimientos, lenguaje, número o relaciones lógicas. Uno de los retos cruciales que han de afrontar todos los niños a lo largo de su desarrollo es la comprensión y uso de estos sistemas de representación. En este libro se analizan los principales sistemas externos de representación (los sistemas figurativos, el sistema de escritura, el sistema de notación numérica y las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación) desde una triple perspectiva: histórica (¿cuáles fueron las principales etapas de construcción de estos sistemas?), evolutiva (¿cómo van adquiriendo los niños estos sistemas?) y educativa (¿cómo se han ido configurando una serie de prácticas sociales encaminadas a favorecer dicha adquisición?). Este triple análisis, que se basa en las investigaciones más recientes sobre el tema, ofrece al lector la posibilidad de entender el papel jugado por los sistemas externos de representación en la configuración cultural de la mente humana.
