This book takes a global approach to the distant past, following the development of human societies across the globe from the last Ice Age, 11,700 years ago, to the rise of Islam in the seventh century CE.The only book of its kind, A Global History of the Ancient World provides succinct narratives of the first Asian, African and European civilizations and their importance for later history without foregoing the key topics of conventional textbooks. Thematic overviews give truly global perspectives on connections, disconnections and parallel developments shaping the ancient world.Written for students of history, classics and related disciplines, the book will appeal to anyone interested in widening their view of early history.

From the Fjords to the Nile brings together essays by students and colleagues of Richard Holton Pierce (b. 1935), presented on the occasion of his 80th birthday. It covers topics on the ancient world and the Near East. Pierce is Professor Emeritus of Egyptology at the University of Bergen. Starting out as an expert in Egyptian languages, and of law in Greco-Roman Egypt, his professional interest has spanned from ancient Nubia and Coptic Egypt, to digital humanities and game theory. His contributions as scholar, teacher, supervisor and informal advisor to Norwegian studies in Egyptology, classics, archaeology, history, religion, and linguistics through more than five decades can hardly be overstated.

This book presents a novel perspective on long-distance trade in the ancient world that integrates network theory and environmental analysis into our understandings of production, movement and exchange in the so-called Long Classical Millennium (c.300 BCE – 900 BCE).This approach departs from traditional Eurocentric perspectives that have tended to focus primarily on empires and imperial agency as the dominant analytical category, arguing instead that environmental factors played a much greater role in influencing the formation of trade routes during this period. Written in an accessible style, chapters seek to integrate and synthesise recent developments from global history, network studies, economic history and critical geography, offering new ways for scholars to examine the growth of this proto-globalised economic system. By examining the networks of people, places, animals, and things that came together in order to connect ancient Africa and Eurasia, the author de-centers any one group or region to instead foreground the environmental dynamics of ancient trade. This book will be a fascinating resource for scholars and students of ancient and global history, as well as ancient economic and environmental historians, archaeologists, and more.
