Elaine Pagels är Harrington Spear Paine Professor of Religion vid Princeton University. Hon har tidigare undervisat vid Barnard College, Columbia University, och är mest känd för sin forskning och texter om de gnostiska evangelierna. Förutom Satans ursprung har hon bland annat skrivit böckerna The Gnostic Gospels(1989); Reading Judas: the Gospel of Judas and the shaping of Christianity(2007); och Revelations: visions, prophecy, and politics in the Book of Revelation(2012).

Long buried and suppressed, the Gnostic Gospels contain the secret writings attributed to the followers of Jesus.In 1945 fifty-two papyrus texts, including gospels and other secret documents, were found concealed in an earthenware jar buried in the Egyptian desert. These so-called Gnostic writings were Coptic translations from the original Greek dating from the time of the New Testament.
