Introduction to the Mechanochemistry of Solids offers a thorough exploration of mechanochemistry, a field rapidly reshaping modern chemistry by enabling solvent-free, efficient synthesis of materials. The book serves as a vital resource for those new to solid-state reactivity, presenting foundational theories and practical insights that illuminate how mechanical forces can drive chemical change. Readers are introduced to the complexities of mechanochemical processes, the nuances of device selection, and the impact of sample preparation, providing a solid framework for understanding how physical forces influence chemical transformations in solids. In addition, the book discusses the growing diversity of scientists contributing to mechanochemistry and outlines the transformative potential of this technology for sustainable and green chemistry. It is especially recommended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as researchers in chemistry, materials science, and related fields.Provides a general introduction to the fundamental concepts of mechanochemistry in relation to solid-state reactivityOutlines concepts from a multidisciplinary perspective that is set alongside practical adviceSupports better understanding for the reader, including ground-up introductions, ‘key concept’ boxes, select case studies to solidify understanding, schematics and flow charts, and concluding ‘knowledge check’ questions for reflectionIncludes an overview of potential applications of mechanochemistry

This book explains theoretical and technological aspects of amorphous drug formulations. It is intended for all those wishing to increase their knowledge in the field of amorphous pharmaceuticals. Conversion of crystalline material into the amorphous state, as described in this book, is a way to overcome limited water solubility of drug formulations, in this way enhancing the chemical activity and bioavailability inside the body. Written by experts from various fields and backgrounds, the book introduces to fundamental physical aspects (explaining differences between the ordered and the disordered solid states, the enhancement of solubility resulting from drugs amorphization, physical instability and how it can be overcome) as well as preparation and formulation procedures to produce and stabilize amorphous pharmaceuticals. Readers will thus gain a well-funded understanding and find a multi-faceted discussion of the properties and advantages of amorphous drugs and of the challenges in producing and stabilizing them. The book is an ideal source of information for researchers and students as well as professionals engaged in research and development of amorphous pharmaceutical products.

This volume is a collection of lectures presented during the 2009 International School on High-pressure Crystal- graphy, which took place at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture, between June 4 and 14, 2009, in the very picturesque Sicilian town of Erice. st The 2009 school was the 41 course of the "International School of Cryst- lography" organized at the Majorana Center and was directed by Elena Figure 1. Audience, including local Boldyreva (Novosibirsk University) organizers (orange scarfs) and student and Przemyslaw Dera (University of participants during one of the lectures. Chicago). Unmatched support and excellent on-site organization was provided by the expert team consisting of Prof. Paola Spadon (Uniersity of Padova), Prof. Lodovico Riva di San Severino (University of Bologna), Elena Papinutto and Prof. John Irvin (University of California, San Franciso), aided by great team of young local organizers ("orange scarfs"). Major part of funding for the school was provided by a grant from the NATO Science for Peace and Security program, through which the 2009 Erice school was recognized as a NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI).

This important book deals with the question of what the mechanical treatment of solids is, and why the reactivity of solids is changed as a result of mechanical treatment (called mechanical activation). It outlines the possible human activities where these phenomena can be used (including the synthesis of new materials, processing of mineral raw materials, synthesis and modification of pharmaceuticals, preparation of catalysts, cosmetics). The book is concerned with a young but fast-developing branch of chemical science — mechanochemistry. It discusses the main ideas and features of this field and its possible applications in industry. It is intended for readers interested in the problems of modern chemistry, and for students in chemical departments of higher education establishments, as material for extracurricular reading.
