ELIZABETH KLEHFOTH växte upp i Elkhart, Indiana. Hon undervisade tidigare på Indiana University, där hon har en master i kreativt skrivande. Hon är i dag bosatt i Los Angeles. Det slutna sällskapet är hennes första roman. Filmrättigheterna till boken har köpts av produktionsbolaget Made Up Stories, vars ägare Bruna Papandrea tillsammans med Reese Witherspoon låg bakom HBO-serien Big Little Lies och filmerna Gone Girl och Wild.
