The editing process is a vital part of virtually every form of media. Primarily associated with texts and written language, editing is equally essential, if less examined, in regard to visual media. Editing the Image looks at the editing of visual media as both a series of technical exercises and as an allegory. It touches on concerns that are crucial to the history of art and visual culture, as well as those media and institutions that produce and disseminate the visual arts in our society.Featuring contributors from a wide range of disciplines, Editing the Image considers editing in the context of academic journals, art-historical texts, illustrated books, museum displays, and exhibitions. It is an inclusive analysis of visual forms commonly associated with the process of editing - photography, film, and video - as well as some that are not intrinsically linked to editing - painting, sculpture, and architecture. In addition to wide-ranging academic considerations, this collection includes discussions of moving picture media and studio art by practitioners, giving the study a practical focus. For anyone who has considered the implications of the editorial process, this work will be of significant interest.

When Agrippa I, an adventurous Roman-Judean prince, was forced to flee Rome as a political fugitive, he sought sanctuary in Malatha, an abandoned fortress deep in the desolate Negev desert. Malhata is one of a group of fortresses on the Roman-Judaean frontier with Nabataea (roughly equivalent to modern Jordan). This fortress, located on a tel in the southern portion of the group, is associated with the remains of a Roman road and occupied a strategically central position on an important crossroads between southern Roman Palestine and central Judaea, and between the Dead and Mediterranean seas. It was also on the Roman sector of the Frankincense Trail caravan trade route with the Arabian Peninsula. As well, it is believed to have been 'Malatha', mentioned by the Roman-Jewish historian Josephus as the location where the fugitive Herodian prince, Agrippa I, hid when forced to flee his privileged life in Rome among the Julio-Claudians. An archaeological excavation report and GIS spatial analysis of Malhata reveal information on the fortress' purpose, and support its being the location where Agrippa hid. Thus, it draws on archaeological findings, GIS mapping, and narrative reconstruction to explore the mysterious fortress of Malatha and Agrippa I's exile through new eyes. Note: First published in British Roman Roads Itinera, 2023, this publication is very similar to book, Fugitive Prince: The Negev Hideout of Agrippa I at Malhata, which is Book #3 of my series, "e;Roman Provincial Shadows: Agrippa I, Intrigue, and Power"e;, making it unnecessary to purchase both. His palaces, fortresses, and temples stand as silent witnesses to an era of opulence and ambition. As we explore these stone remnants, we lay the groundwork for Agrippa I's entrance—a ruler whose choices would resonate differently, and whose mysterious death hints at a true crime tale.Key Points:Herod's Grandeur: From the towering walls of Masada to the marble courtyards of Caesarea, Herod's architectural feats dazzle.Public Image and Private Identity: How did Herod present himself through these structures? His path, though less monumental, bears its own weight and legacy.Unveiling Social Shifts:Herodian Ware: Our exploration extends beyond architecture. A new Herodian ware emerges—a pottery style distinct from the Judaean elite's. This pottery hints at a shift in lifestyle, perhaps a social schism.Complexities of Reign: What complexities did Agrippa I need to deal with during his reign? This will be explored further in Book 5.True Crime Mystery:The Enigma of Agrippa I's Demise: Agrippa I's mysterious death remains shrouded in speculation. Could it be assassination? This book delves into the political motives, toxicological factors, and historical records to unravel the true crime mystery behind his sudden demise. As we uncover fragments and decipher inscriptions, we glimpse lives lived centuries ago. Herod's stones echo, providing the background and setting for Agrippa's choices—which ripple through time. Join us on this archaeological voyage—a bridge between rulers, a window into an era. This volume is part of my 750-page Classical Archaeology Master's thesis, awarded cum laude by the University of Pisa. This volume is part of the "e;Roman Provincial Shadows"e; series.

This book explores three interwoven topics related to ancient Roman medical practice and aspects of the Roman military, shedding light on themes often overlooked in historical accounts. It is comprised of three treatises:Ancient Roman Women Physicians: Long thought to have played a negligible role in Roman history, archaeological evidence and ancient documents reveal that women physicians were as equally honoured and respected as and by their male colleagues. These pioneering medicae held significant positions in Roman healthcare, contributing to the advancement of medicine and society.Roman Military Medicine: Remarkably sophisticated, Roman military medicine included a range of practitioners, medical training, and advanced surgical techniques. This section delves also discusses the instruments used, such as scalpels and probes, as well as the ongoing debate surrounding valetudinaria (military hospitals). Roman surgical kits were virtually identical to modern ones, demonstrating the ingenuity of ancient Roman medicine.Castra Praetoria: An examination of the structure and topography of the Castra Praetoria in Rome, the barracks constructed by the Praetorian Prefect Aelius Sejanus in AD 23. These barracks brought the Roman military cohorts and the Praetorian Guard together in one strategic location, ensuring rapid access to the city's centre while projecting Imperial authority.NOTE: This book is a compilation of my previously published works: Roman Women Physicians, Roman Military Medicine from an Archaeological and Historical Perspective, and The Structure and Phases of the Castra Praetoria in Rome. Upgraded with illustrations and diagrams, it combines these topics smoothly. The written contents are the same, however, making it unnecessary to purchase both.

How Films Imagine Antiquity is a journey through the cinematic imagination of the ancient world. From childhood encounters with epic films to a career in archaeology, psychology, and cultural analysis, Elizabeth Legge brings a rare interdisciplinary lens to the stories that shaped our understanding of antiquity. This book examines how films construct ancient worlds — not only through sets and costumes, but through narrative logic, political assumptions, emotional archetypes, and cultural memory. Why do certain characters endure across decades of cinema? How do films blend myth, history, and psychology? And what do these choices reveal about the societies that create them? With chapters ranging from The Ten Commandments to Gladiator, from Roman Britain to biblical epics and psychological mythmaking, this work explores the evolution of epic storytelling and the shifting ways Hollywood imagines power, identity, and the ancient past.Written by an archaeologist, novelist (as Elyse DeBarre), and lifelong student of film, this book blends scholarly insight with accessible commentary. It is also a living book: new chapters and revisions appear periodically, and readers can access them simply by refreshing the text. For anyone who loves ancient history, epic cinema, cultural analysis, or the intersection of myth and storytelling, How Films Imagine Antiquity offers a rich, evolving exploration of how the past lives on in film.
