It is almost impossible today to find an economic sector or aspect of society which does not involve AI techniques in some way. This pervasive technology has become indispensible in a multitude of ways, from supporting decision making to managing digital devices such as smart sensors, mechanical arms or artificial eyes. The ability of AI to emulate intelligence in the resolution of challenging problems has placed it at the centre of problem solving in all areas of our society.This book presents contributions from CCIA 2018, the 21st International Conference of the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence which took place in Alt Empordà, Catalonia, Spain, on 8-10th October 2018. The book aims to provide a picture of what is being achieved and what is under development in AI today. As such, its contents represent the diversity of approaches and applications currently being researched, but it also presents invited contributions which deal with some of the challenges that will have to be faced in the decade to come. The contributions included in this book are organized under the following headings: logic, satisfiability and fuzzy sets; classifiers, networks and machine learning; data science, recommender systems and case-based reasoning; natural language and sound processing; cognitive systems and agents; and computer vision and robotics. The book also covers a number of current AI challenges and new trends like big data, spatial problem solving, ethics and AI, and how blockchain impacts AI.Providing an up-to-the-minute overview of current AI technology and research, this book will be of value to all those with an interest in the subject.

The 35 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 49 submissions. The presentations cover a wide range of CBR topics of interest both to researchers and practitioners including case retrieval and adaptation, similarity assessment, case base maintenance, knowledge management, recommender systems, multiagent systems, textual CBR, and applications to healthcare and computer games.

The biennial European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML) series is intended to provide an international forum for the discussion of the latest high quality research results in machine learning and is the major European scienti?c event in the ?eld. The eleventh conference (ECML 2000) held in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain from May 31 to June 2, 2000, has continued this tradition by attracting high quality papers from around the world. Scientists from 21 countries submitted 100 papers to ECML 2000, from which 20 were selected for long oral presentations and 23 for short oral presentations. This selection was based on the recommendations of at least two reviewers for each submitted paper. It is worth noticing that the number of papers reporting applications of machine learning has increased in comparison to past ECML conferences. We believe this fact shows the growing maturity of the ?eld. This volume contains the 43 accepted papers as well as the invited talks by Katharina Morik from theUniversity of Dortmund and Pedro Domingos from the University of Washington at Seattle. In addition, three workshops were jointly organized by ECML 2000 and the European Network of Excellence - net: “Dealing with Structured Data in Machine Learning and Statistics W- stites”, “Machine Learning in the New Information Age” , and “Meta-Learning: Building Automatic Advice Strategies for Model Selection and Method Com- nation”.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second International Conference on Case-Based Reasoning, ICCBR-97, held in Providence, RI, USA, in July 1997.The volume presents 39 revised full scientific papers selected from a total of 102 submissions; also included are 20 revised application papers. Among the topics covered are representation and formalization, indexing and retrieval, adaptation, learning, integrated approaches, creative reasoning, CBR and uncertainty. This collection of papers is a comprehensive documentation of the state of the art in CBR research and development.

This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th European Workshop on Knowledge Acquisition, Modelling and Management, EKAW '97, held in Sant Feliu de Guixols, Catalonia, Spain, in October 1997.The 20 revised full papers and 11 short papers presented were carefully selected from numerous submissions. Also included is one invited presentation. Among the topics covered are the mainstream knowledge acquisition issues, but also more innovative ones, knowledge integration, enterprise modelling, knowledge reuse, natural language processing, problem solving, knowledge extraction, Web-based knowledge systems, machine learning, data mining, etc.
