Water Engineering and Management - Learning from History explores the pair technology / water use (an indivisible pair, since the first member of the binomial determines the second) which, in the light of the knowledge available in the 21st century and with a conception focused on the near future, goes beyond the limits set by nature itself. The history of water reviewed in the context of this Seminar will help understand the importance water has had in every possible context and civilization in the past, an understanding that will undoubtedly lead to appreciate the true value of the most highly prized among natural resources. For the ultimate goal of the Seminar and the resulting book is "to learn from history", approaching the problem from a pragmatic point of view, far from the political and social interests which, unfortunately, are usually linked to water.This work will be of particular interest to water managers, politicians, decision makers, and scientists and professionals working in the area of water sciences.

Two of the main concerns in respect of water supply systems are their efficiency and their reliability, which are discussed in this text. They are grouped into five sections, and the book covers fundamentals, leakage detection in networks, network management (leakage control), managing water distribution systems to reduce energy costs, and reliability, risk analysis and rehabilitation. A balanced approach has been achieved by inviting contributors from academia as well as consultancies and water supply companies.

During the past decade many countries in the world have experienced droughts, with severe impacts on water urban supply systems. Because droughts are natural phenomena, water utilities must design and implement drought management plans. These proceedings deal with the management plans. The contributions in this book have been presented in four sections: Water supply systems; modernization; drought management in an urban context; and practical cases (Israel, USA, Italy, Spain). To achieve a well-balanced approach, authors were invited from academia as well as from consultancies and water utilities.

The contributions in this book have been carefully selected and presented in four sections: Introduction Water Supply Systems Modernization Drought Management in an Urban Context Practical Cases (Israel, USA, Italy, Spain) To achieve a well-balanced approach, authors were invited from academia as well as from consultancies and water utilities, and have wide experience in the subject. The book is mainly aimed at water supply engineers, working in utilities and consultancies.

The spectacular industrial and economic development of the twentieth century was achieved at a considerable environmental cost. The increasingly precarious position of water, the most valuable of natural resources, reflects this trend. Today we have come to realise that concepts of sustainable development need to replace the antiquated belief that the environment in general, and natural resources in particular, are simply there for the taking. The responsible use of water, in which man profits from resources without endangering their future, should have precedence in any water policy. Regional Water System Management contains invited lectures presented by eminent authors to the international Seminar Regional Water Management. Water Conservation, Water Supply, Systems Integration held in Valencia (Spain) in 2002. The publication provides a general overview of basic water management principles for the twenty-first century and will be of interest to those studying water conservation, as well as professionals already in the field.

The concept of sustainable development appeared almost twenty years ago, adapting traditional policies to new circumstances, and promoting progress capable of satisfying the necessities of both present and future generations. It is widely believed that the need for a proper and sustainable management of water will be a problem which will confront society in the 21st century. In this publication, the main political aspects are successively developed, including the EU Water Framework Directive, the globalization and privatization of fresh water and the case of the new Australian structure for water regulation. The second part of the book is devoted to more practical aspects: from the real effects of climate change, to the various implications of water sustainability on agriculture and cities, devoting particular attention to the experience of the Environment Agency in UK. Finally, the last chapter delves into the economic aspects of the different approaches, and the points to take into account when they are to be translated to the final water tariff.

Hydraulic machinery such as turbines and pumps is widely used around the world. Related topics concerning design, operation and maintenance are of relevant interest. In this context, cavitation is a phenomenon to be taken into account, and this was treated in the XVIII IAHR Symposium on Hydraulic Machinery and Cavitation which took place in Valencia, Spain, 16th-19th September, 1996 and which was hosted by the Polytechnic University of Valencia. The proceedings of the Symposium have been published in two volumes. This book is intended to be a reference text comprising the latest innovations on this subject.
