Der Vollwaise Tobias Mayer (1723–1762) entwickelte raffinierte Messinstrumente und eine sehr präzise Theorie zur Bewegung des Mondes um die Erde. Diese wissenschaftliche Biografie widmet sich seinem Leben und Schaffen als Autodidakt und Professor.Tobias Mayer, bereits in jungen Jahren ein hervorragender Zeichner, war eine bedeutsame Persönlichkeit auf dem Gebiet der Kartographie. Mit 16 Jahren zeichnete er den ersten Stadtplan von Esslingen, mit 18 Jahren publizierte er sein erstes Mathematikbuch, mit 22 Jahren seinen Mathematischen Atlas. Im bedeutenden kartographischen Institut Homann Erben in Nürnberg war er von 1746 bis 1751 als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter angestellt; er zeichnete und verbesserte in dieser Zeit ca. 40 Karten. Seine kartographischen Fähigkeiten brachten seinen Zeitgenossen die Mängel der geographischen Ortsbestimmung ins Bewusstsein. Später entwickelte er als Professor für Ökonomie, Mathematik und Astronomie in Göttingen (ab 1751) seine Mondtheorie, zeichnete ein für hundert Jahre unübertroffenes Bild der Mondoberfläche, vermaß die Koordinaten von fast 1000 Sternen des Zodiakalkreises und gewann für sein Verfahren der Längenbestimmung auf See einen Teil des Längenpreises des britischen Parlaments.
