Learning to Live the Life You Long For

In Jeremiah 12:5 God says to the prophet, "If you're worn out in this footrace with men, what makes you think you can race against horses?"

We all long to live life at its best-to fuse freedom and spontaneity with purpose and meaning. Why then do we often find our lives so humdrum, so unadventuresome, so routine? Or else so frantic, full of activity, but still devoid of fulfillment? How do we learn to risk, to trust, to pursue wholeness and excellence-to run with the horses instead of shuffling along with the crowd?

In a series of profound reflections on the life of Jeremiah the prophet, Eugene Peterson explores the heart of what it means to be fully and genuinely human. In this special commemorative edition, you'll find:

The book of Revelation made accessible by one of today’s most trusted theological minds: Eugene Peterson.

If you are daunted by Revelation’s complexity or confused by its claims, Reversed Thunder brings one of the most difficult-to-understand texts in the Bible into clear view. Eugene Peterson’s eloquent meditation takes a Jesus-centered lens to Saint John’s futuristic vision, in a grounded reading that engages the spiritual imagination, awakens hope for the future, and interprets the truth of these last words on scripture, Christ, church, worship, evil, prayer, salvation, and heaven.

Peterson writes not as an end-times speculator but as a pastor-poet, translating Revelation’s sometimes abstract imagery and symbols of eschatology into fresh insights for all believers. This commentary reveals itself to be a definitive resource on the topics of end times theology, apocalypse, eschatology, and faithful living today.

To address this common obstacle, Eugene Peterson turns to the Psalms, drawing on his extensive knowledge in Biblical studies, history, and Hebrew. Peterson guides readers through the Psalms, offering insight and perspective to empower readers to dive more deeply and intimately into prayer.

In this inspirational volume, Professor Eugene H. Peterson, translator of "The Message, " uses stories from David's epic life as vivid lessons in everyday faith and spirituality. Exploring David's experiences of friendship, grief, love, sin, and suffering, as well as sanctuary, beauty, and wilderness, he reawakens us to the enduring truths behind these beloved stories.

"As we tell and listen to the David story, we're at the same time being trained in the nature of story itself as the primary literary form for receiving God's revelation."--from "Leap Over a Wall"

"Eugene H. Peterson skillfully uses the David story to talk not about David, but about you and about me. "Leap Over a Wall" is the human story in all its wonder and terror and pity."--Richard J. Foster, author of "Celebration of Discipline" and "Prayer: Finding the Heart's True Home"

"The author brings the Old Testament world revealingly close to our own century, and he makes vivid the notion that God's purposes are worked out in the ordinariness of specific human lives." -- "Publisher's Weekly"

"This Everyman analysis brings new life to the stories of David and Goliath, David and Bathsheba, David and Absalom, David and the Temple." -- "The Washington Post"

The heartening, transformative story of an unlikely pastor, and one answer to the oft-neglected question: what does it actually mean to be a pastor?

Eugene Peterson never wanted to be a pastor. But, in 1962, when he was asked by the Presbyterian Church to begin a new church in Bel Air, Maryland, he surprised himself by answering the call. Suddenly at the helm of the newly-established Christ Our King Presbyterian Church, Peterson—who had little conception of what it really meant to be a pastor—dedicated his life to understanding and fulfilling his vocation.

In The Pastor, Peterson shares the stories and lessons from his thirty years in that single pulpit. The result is a quietly powerful and inspirational book, a true gift to anyone looking to grow in their faith and live virtuously. Steering away from abstractions, Peterson challenges conventional wisdom regarding church marketing, mega pastors, and the church’s too-cozy relationship to American consumerism to present a simple, grounded description of what being a minister means today. With warmth, familiarity, and humor, Peterson offers a contemporary perspective on an ancient vocation, one with authenticity, openness, and faith at its center.

Here is a simple but revolutionary reminder that “preaching is proclamation... but only when it gets embedded in conversation, in a listening ear and responding tongue, does it become gospel.”

An illuminating example of friendship as a vital way God answers our need for guidance, encouragement, affirmation, and correction.

Most of the time, what we need to help us through the struggles in our lives is not the advice of an expert but the wisdom of a friend. Through this series of eloquent letters written to a life-long friend, author Eugene Peterson demonstrates friendship as a means to Christian maturity.

The topics covered in this warm and highly personal correspondence are broad and varied, but one thing comes through with constancy and clarity: there is great value in a wise, experienced friend to help us see more clearly and to strengthen our growth in faith and godliness.
