In eleven contributions, Visual Antisemitism in Central Europe, Imagery of Hatred deals with visual manifestations of antisemitism in Central Europe from the Middle Ages to the present day. The publication, which presents heretofore largely unknown materials, seeks responses from diverse perspectives to the question of the role of visuality in the development of antisemitic moods and political agendas that encouraged hatred towards Jews. The scope of visual anti-Judaism and antisemitism always was and still is very wide: from stereotypical depictions that can conceal an underlying message through humorous content, to clearly formulated assaults that aim to escalate animosity towards an imaginary collective enemy. The goal in both these cases is the exclusion of Jews from the majority society imagined as a monolithic whole, and the reification of a dividing line between "us" and "them". With its wide thematic and methodological range, this book offers a comprehensive image of the phenomenon of visual anti-Judaism and antisemitism and provides rich comparative material for the entire Central European region.

Holocaust monuments in Central Europe, especially in today’s Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Germany, have received surprisingly little academic attention. Yet these sites of memory offer deep insight into the individual, collective and cultural memory of the tragedy of the Holocaust. The first Holocaust monuments were created shortly after the end of the Second World War. At first, they were monuments and memorials commemorating Jewish victims, but later, stone reminders of the Roma victims of the Holocaust were added. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, a second wave of Holocaust monuments and memorials took place in Central Europe, continuing to this day. The aim of this publication is to present both the historical and artistic circumstances of the creation of these Holocaust monuments and memorials, as well as their subsequent reception. In a broader social and cultural context, the emphasis is placed on the formation of Jewish and Roma identity in Central Europe.

Traces the history of visual representations of anti-Jewish hatred in Czech Bohemia. The vicious scourges of religion-based anti-Judaism and ethnically-rooted anti-Semitism are tragically deep-seated aspects of Czech Bohemian history. Images of Malice—copublished with Artefactum—examines visual instances from the well-known low points of historic Bohemian anti-Semitic resentment, while also recasting common views of eras not typically associated with rises in virulent anti-Jewish sentiment. This mapping of the visual signs of anti-Judaism and anti-Semitism is also an account of their broader meaning, as the processes of stereotyping, delegitimization, dehumanization, and exclusion from society represent a more dire and universal problem. As Images of Malice makes bracingly clear, the danger of anti-Jewish visuals is still an urgent problem today, in Europe and beyond.
