A detailed case study of the government policymaking process, this volume takes one key issue--the strategic minerals problem--and examines each stage of decision-making from the acquisition of raw data through the promulgation of foreign policy. By focusing on a single issue, the author is able to provide a unique window into the activities, structure, and dynamics of key U.S. government policymaking bodies--and a more accurate account of the policymaking process than has heretofore been available in print. Students of government, military strategies, and policymaking will find Anderson's work enlightening reading.

This detailed study is the first complete attempt to describe the vulnerability of minerals of strategic importance to the United States. It determines not only which are the primary strategic minerals, but what risks are involved in obtaining them from current sources and transporting them by current routes. Anderson first surveys which nations the United States is dependent upon for its strategic minerals and then turns to an analysis of the total global strategic mineral infrastructure.

Although the focus is on geopolitics rather than regional geography, the aim of the book is to provide a reorientation, while maintaining an essential continuity with W. B. Fisher’s book of the same name, the seventh edition of which was published in 1978. A comprehensive account is provided of the physical and human geography of the region and, in this, certain sections from Fisher’s book have been retained. Based on the geography, a geopolitical assessment is then made of the states of the Middle East and of the major issues, such as water and conflict, which illustrate the interplay of geography and politics. With comprehensive illustrations, this is a lively and much-needed book, based upon a well-respected work, providing an excellent synopsis of the complexities that make the Middle East such an intriguing and important global region.

Strategic minerals are a major element of resource geopolitics. The US has always provided the umbrella for the West and is now the global policeman on strategic mineral supply. As the global economic system has developed it has become increasingly clear that the geopolitical balance in global mineral supply is focused on the countries of the former Soviet Union, China and South Africa. The entire import list of US non-fuel minerals is examined in the context of import dependence, the criticality of end-use and the vulnerability of sources. This analysis builds up a complete picture of the varying levels of vulnerability for each mineral, allowing lists of both key and marginal strategic minerals to be compiled. The major sources of these minerals and their relative potential problems of supply are considered. These problems range from geopolitical concerns to the monopolistic agency of multinationals and cartels to the mechanistics of sea-line communications. The book concludes with an assessment of present and future scenarios based on shifting geopolitical influence at the global level, outlining countermeasures, both actual and potential.

Originally published in 1993, Applying the Children Act (1989) in Boarding and Residential Environments identifies many of the key issues which arise in caring for children away from home. These issues are examined, using the framework of The Children Act and its implementation. The concerns analysed and the questions addressed are essentially practical. However, given the broad sweep of the subject, the book is likely to be of interest to many others than practitioners involved in educating or caring for children.
