Multilevel converters have gained attention in recent years for medium/high voltage and high power industrial and residential applications. The main advantages of multilevel converters over two level converters include less voltage stress on power semiconductors, low dv/dt, low common voltage, reduced electromagnetic interference, and low total harmonics distortion, among others. Better output power quality is ensured by increasing the number of levels in the synthesized output voltage waveform. Several multilevel topologies have been reported in the literature, such as neutral point clamped (NPC), flying capacitor (FC), cascaded H-bridge (CHB), hybrid cascaded H-bridge, asymmetrical cascaded H-bridge, modular multilevel converters (MMC), active neutral point clamped converters (ANPC), and packed U-cell type converters and various reduced device counts and a reduced number of source-based topologies have been proposed in literature. The multilevel converter, although a proven and enabling technology, still presents numerous challenges in topologies, modulation, and control, as well as in need-based applications. Since multilevel converters offer a wide range of possibilities, research and development in the areas of multilevel converter topologies, modulation, and control in various applications are still growing. To further improve multilevel converter energy efficiency, reliability, power density, and cost, many research groups across the world are working to broaden the application areas of multilevel converters and make them more attractive and competitive compared to classic topologies. Multilevel Converters intends to provide deep insight about multilevel converter operation, modulation, and control strategies and various recent applications of multilevel converters such as in variable speed drives, renewable energy generation, and power systems.

PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY Discover comprehensive insights into the latest advancements in solar PV technology, including power electronics, maximum power point tracking schemes, and forecasting techniques, with a focus on improving the performance of PV systems. A huge number of research articles and books have been published in the last two decades, covering different issues of PV efficiency, circuits, and systems for power processing and their related control. Books that have been published cover one or more topics but altogether fail to give a complete picture of the different aspects of PV systems. Photovoltaic Systems Technology aims to close the gap by providing a comprehensive review of techniques/practices that are dedicated to improving the performance of PV systems. The book is divided into three parts: the first part is dedicated to advancements in power electronic converters for PV systems; tools and techniques for maximum power point tracking of PV systems will be covered in the second part of the book; and the third part covers advancements in techniques for solar PV forecasting. The overall focus of the book is to highlight the advancements in modeling, design, performance under faulty conditions, forecasting, and application of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems using metaheuristic, evolutionary computation, machine learning, and AI approaches. It is intended for researchers and engineers aspiring to learn about the latest advancements in solar PV technology with emphasis on power electronics involved, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) schemes, and forecasting techniques.

This edited book on “Advances in Electrical Systems and Innovative Renewable Energy Techniques” is an outcome of the selected papers presented at the International Conference on Electrical Systems & Automation, (ICESA 2023) held from 29 to 30, May 2023 at the Faculty of Sciences and technologies, Al Hoceïma, Morocco.This edited book is divided into 2 volumes. This volume will be divided into 3 parts, each devoted to distinct yet interconnected aspects of the subject matter.The first part focuses on various advancements in renewable energy techniques. It explores topics ranging from biomass combustion characteristics and hydrogen production using photovoltaics to the assessment of wave energy potential and the performance evaluation of solar collectors. These research papers not only shed light on the current state-of-the-art technologies but also offer valuable insights into their implementation, efficiency, and potential impact on the energy landscape.The second part focuses on interdisciplinary approaches between electrical and renewable energy systems and includes research chapters on photovoltaic (PV) energy, wind energy, and microgrid systems.For PV systems, several topics and issues are addressed such as modeling of PV systems using single diode model and double diode model; analytical and numerical methods for extraction of PV parameters; extraction of maximum power from PV system using integral SMC strategy, sun-pointing orientation, SuDoKu, and ANN algorithms; and fault detection and classification based on metaheuristic technique, and feedforward neural network.For the wind system, its modeling is first discussed, and then the control of the wind system using direct power, PI, fuzzy logic, sliding mode, and time delay strategies is analyzed.In the third part, the chapters focus on efficient energy management, optimization of microgrids, and the use of advancedtechnologies to improve energy performance. Researchers present innovative solutions to address the challenges of energy efficiency, grid responsiveness, and the integration of new energy sources.
