A century before the Philippines came under American control, Americans were already travelling to Southeast Asia regularly. This book looks at the writings of American diplomats, adventurers, and scientists and chronicles how nineteenth-century Americans viewed and imagined Southeast Asia through their own cultural-political lenses. It argues that as Americans came to visit the region they also brought with them a train of cultural assumptions and biases that contributed to the development of American Orientalism in Southeast Asia.

Empire-building did not only involve the use of excessive violence against native communities, but also required the gathering of data about the native Other. This is a book about books, which looks at the writings of Western colonial administrators, company-men and map-makers who wrote about Southeast Asia in the 19th century. In the course of their information-gathering they had also framed the people of Southeast Asia in a manner that gave rise to Orientalist racial stereotypes that would be used again and again. Data-Gathering in Colonial Southeast Asia 1800-1900: Framing the Other revisits the era of colonial data-collecting to demonstrate the workings of the imperial echo chamber, and how in the discourse of 19th century colonial-capitalism data was effectively weaponized to serve the interests of Empire.

The nations of Southeast Asia today are rapidly integrating economically and politically, but that integration is also counterbalanced by forces ranging from hyper-nationalism to disputes over cultural ownership throughout the region. Those forces, Farish A. Noor argues in this book, have their roots in the region's failure to come to a critical understanding of how current national and cultural identities in the region came about. By the closing decades of the 19th century, photography and postcard production arrived in British Malaya. The colonial-era postcards that were produced up to the 1940s captured virtually all aspects of life in the British colony and remain as visual testimonies of how the colonial subjects at the time lived and worked, as well as their relationship to the land. And yet, despite the developments in photography and postcard production, the images that were produced also reiterated and reproduced visuals of the land and its people in debilitating terms that were similar to earlier depictions of Southeast Asians that date back to the 17th century.This book looks at the production of postcards in the colonial era and argues that, in many ways, colonial postcards replicated and perpetuated Eurocentric understandings about human society and the natural world in the colonised East and shows how the images corresponded to established understandings about development and colonial intervention. Though the colonial-era postcard-maker may not have been at the vanguard of colonial expansion, he did play a role in helping to build the order of knowledge and power upon which racialised colonial capitalism rested. This work also considers the enduring legacy of these images today and raises the question of why similar visuals remain in circulation in the postcolonial present.
