Ausgehend vom Phänomen des Sprechens als einer «verorteten» Praxis, beleuchtet die Arbeit den komplexen, keineswegs selbstverständlichen Zusammenhang zwischen Sprache und geographischem Raum.

Als assoziative Verknüpfung von «Sprechen und Ort» sowie von «Sprache(n) und Gebiet(en)» behandelt der Autor das Thema auf der Basis ihrer mentalen Konzeptualisierung unter systematischer Berücksichtigung kognitiver, ethologischer und (sozial-)geographischer Ansätze. Im Zentrum der Arbeit steht der eigens geprägte Begriff der «sprachlichen Territorialität», der das gebietsbezogene Verhalten von Individuen, Sprechergemeinschaften und deren Institutionen umfasst. Empirisch wird dessen Nutzen anhand eines Konfliktsituationen in Belgien, Frankreich, der Schweiz und Spanien umfassenden Korpus nachgewiesen, indem Phänomene der sprachlichen Aneignung, Markierung, Abgrenzung und Verteidigung von «Sprachgebieten» gemeinsam erfasst und sichtbar gemacht werden.

Die Arbeit bietet damit nicht nur eine theoretische Auseinandersetzung mit den Prämissen der Sprachgeographie und der Perzeption von Syn- und Diatopie, sondern schafft durch die Integration neuerer Konzepte (z.B. linguistic landscapes) ein umfassendes Verständnis sprachlicher Raumbezogenheit.

Language standardization is an ongoing process based on the notions of linguistic correctness and models. This manual contains thirty-six chapters that deal with the theories of linguistic norms and give a comprehensive up-to-date description and analysis of the standardization processes in the Romance languages. The first section presents the essential approaches to the concept of linguistic norm ranging from antiquity to the present, and includes individual chapters on the notion of linguistic norms and correctness in classical grammar and rhetoric, in the Prague School, in the linguistic theory of Eugenio Coseriu, in sociolinguistics as well as in pragmatics, cognitive and discourse linguistics. The second section focuses on the application of these notions with respect to the Romance languages. It examines in detail the normative grammar and the normative dictionary as the reference tools for language codification and modernization of those languages that have a long and well-established written tradition, i.e. Romanian, Italian, French, Catalan, Spanish, and Portuguese. Furthermore, the volume offers a discussion of the key issues regarding the standardization of the ‘minor’ Romance languages as well as Creoles.

Die Konstruktionsgrammatik gehört als theoretisches Paradigma mittlerweile auch in der Romanistik zum "state of the art". Doch stellt die Beschreibung vieler sprachlicher Phänomene auch die Konstruktionsgrammatik in der Praxis immer wieder vor Probleme. Vor allem die Umfelder des Sprechens geraten dabei in den Fokus. Dies gilt einerseits für die Berücksichtigung des Kontextes sprachlicher Ausdrücke in Theorie und Praxis. Andererseits stellt die Beschreibung kommunikativer Gattungen (oder "speech genres") im Sinne von Konstruktionen die Theorie vor neue Herausforderungen. Die Beiträge dieses Sammelbandes widmen sich diesen Themen aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven und bieten Fallstudien zu zahlreichen interessanten Sprachphänomenen der romanischen Sprachen sowie des Englischen.Construction Grammar has now become an established theoretical paradigm within Romance linguistics, forming part of the current "state of the art." Nevertheless, the description of linguistic phenomena frequently presents challenges for its practical application. Above all, the contexts of speech come into focus in this regard. This applies, on the one hand, to the consideration of the usage contexts of linguistic expressions in both theory and practice. On the other hand, the description of communicative genres (or "speech genres") in terms of constructions introduces the theory to a set of new challenges. The contributions to this volume address these topics from various perspectives and provide case studies on numerous interesting language phenomena in Romance languages as well as in English.
