Este audiolibro está narrado en castellano.Siempre en simbiosis con el río Tajo, Toledo se hace visible en la historia escrita a partir de las crónicas latinas, si bien los vestigios arqueológicos se remontan al menos a la Edad del Bronce. Su importancia creciente en el bajo imperio y su situación en el centro peninsular habrían sido determinantes para que la monarquía visigoda hiciese de ella su capital, que asimismo fue adquiriendo un prestigio religioso que no haría sino crecer a lo largo de los tiempos. Musulmana durante tres siglos y medio, fue luego restaurada en sus supuestas esencias católicas, afirmadas por su rango de sede primada de la Iglesia española y de ciudad de los concilios. Sin embargo, el modelo de ''civitas christiana'' nunca pudo deshacerse de la realidad multicultural que constituía su verdadera esencia, primero por la presencia de fuertes contingentes moros y judíos que determinó la coexistencia de tres religiones; y más tarde, cuando se impuso la intolerancia, por la abundancia y el dinamismo de los conversos, que en vano fueron discriminados. 

Fernando Martinez Gil es Doctor en Historia Moderna, y en Antropología y Etnología de América. Complementa la docencia y la investigación con la creación literaria, campo en el que obtuvo el Premio Nacional de Literatura Infantil y el Premio Lazarillo.
