Flora Tristan – författare

Flora Tristan (1803-44) was a leading nineteenth-century French social theorist and author who influenced the likes of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Five years before the publication of The Communist Manifesto, Tristan urged French workers to put aside occupational and social rivalries in order to unite nationwide. Exhorting the workers to act through union (rather than violence) in quest for a livable minimum wage and other benefits, The Workers’ Union outlines the methods for organizing such a union, the goals of the union, and the reason women’s rights must be emphasized in forming it. Among Tristan’s pathbreaking proposals are plans to provide laborers’ children with increased access to education, to supply safe havens for young people and sick and injured workers, and to approach manufacturers and financiers, including those among the nobility, in order to support such programs.

Assuming personal freedoms enjoyed by few women contemporaries, she devoted herself to the cause of universal justice. Tristan traveled widely and tirelessly strived to organize French men and women workers. Several of her writings are here translated into English for the first time.

Incroyable voyage à lépoque, (1ère moitié du XIXème siècle) pour une jeune femme qui voyage seule dans un monde où la femme na pas plus de droits que lenfant et risque à tout moment violences et humiliations. Un récit de voyage qui décrit non seulement la vie dans un bateau et une traversée exténuante, le passage du cap Horn, une étape au Chili avant daccoster au Pérou, et de franchir à dos de mule lespace désertique et montagneux qui la sépare dArequipa, la ville de sa famille.

En esta obra la autora lleva a cabo una reflexión muy profunda sobre la opresión del ser humano, enmarcado en el contexto de la religión, la organización política del Estado, el sistema capitalista y la propiedad. El discurso de Flora Tristán continúa siendo apasionado e inspirador, y contiene una fuerza y una verdad que dan sentido a los conceptos de sororidad, resistencia e indignación contra el sistema capitalista y patriarcal.
