Based on interviews with women who are HIV positive, this sobering pandemic brings to light the deeply rooted and complex problems of living with HIV. Already pushed to the edges of society by poverty, racial politics, and gender injustice, women with HIV in South Africa have found ways to cope with work and men, disclosure of their HIV status, and care for families and children to create a sense of normalcy in their lives. As women take control of their treatment, they help to determine effective routes to ending the spread of the disease.

Men, Masculinities and Intimate Partner Violence examines how gender and other social identities and inequalities shape experiences of, and responses to, violence in intimate relationships. It provides new insights into men as both perpetrators and victims of violence, as well as on how to involve men and boys in anti-violence work. The chapters explore partner violence from the perspectives of researchers, therapists, activists, organisations, media as well as men of different background and sexual orientation. Highlighting the distinct and ambivalent ways we relate to violence and masculinity, this timely volume provides nuanced approaches to men, masculinity and intimate partner violence in various societies in the global North and South. This book foregrounds scholarship on men and masculinities in the context of intimate partner violence. By doing so, it revitalises feminist theorising and research on partner abuse, and brings together the fields of masculinity studies and studies of intimate partner violence. The book will be a vital resource for students and scholars in criminology, gender studies, psychology, social work and sociology, as well as those working with men and boys.Chapter 9 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Engaging Youth in Activism, Research and Pedagogical Praxis: Transnational and Intersectional Perspectives on Gender, Sex, and Race offers critical perspectives on contemporary research and practice directed at young people across the global north and south. Drawing upon pedagogical, programmatic, and activist work with respect to challenging inequalities and injustices for young people, the authors interrogate the dominant discourses of sexuality, gender, race, class, age and other social categories. Emerging out of a Finnish-South African collaboration, this volume does not take a comparative approach but rather a transnational one by embracing the intersections of local and global knowledges. We draw on this transnational and transdisciplinary framework and these various contexts to generate a critique of mainstream theory and pedagogical practice, as well as to subvert and disrupt such research and practice so as to speak more directly to young people's agentic and activist engagements in social justice, specifically inequalities of class, race, gender, age, sexuality, ability, and health.

Reimagining Social Justice Scholarship
Creative Decolonial Feminisms in South Africa and Beyond

Showcasing creative decolonial feminist and critical social justice scholarship, located in a South African context, this book works across modalities and disciplines, and within art and activism, to challenge hegemonic and oppressive forms of gender and sexuality. In the wake of decolonial activism in higher education and civil society since 2015 and the larger struggle for equality and justice, Shefer, Rustin, Boonzaier and their contributors draw primarily from the work of local research and pedagogical projects directed at alternative imaginaries of gender and sexual justice, with global import.Increasingly scholars are engaging in collaborative, dialogical and creative work that foregrounds performance, art, music, crafts, literature, as well as embodied, affective and relational engagements in the making of knowledge. This book shares some of these diverse counter-hegemonic pedagogies and research approaches that bring an intersectional and decolonial feminist lens to contemporary efforts to decolonise higher education and larger civil society.Producing lines of thought and sharing praxis that destabilises, disrupts and opens up new possibilities for justice scholarship, the book provides a space for going beyond critical reflexivity in research and practice related to gender and sexual inequalities. It seeks to make a scholarly intervention founded on rethinking its own grounds through collaborations with knowledges often deployed by those outside the authoritative, “expert” domains of academia, aligning it with feminist and decolonial aims. This book is a valuable resource for students and scholars of gender, sexuality and intersectionality, particularly those with a focus on the global South.

This edited volume seeks to critically engage with the diversity of feminist and post-colonial theory to counter hegemonic Western knowledge in mainstream community psychology. In doing so, it situates paradigms of thought and representation that capture the lived experiences of those in the global South. Specifically, the book takes an intersectional approach towards its reshaping of community psychology, centering African, black, postcolonial, and decolonial feminist critiques in its 1) critique of existing hegemonic Euro-American community psychology concepts, theories, and practice, 2) proposal of new feminist, indigenous, and decolonial methodological approaches, and 3) real-life examples of engagement, research, dialogue, and reflexive qualitative psychology practice. The book concludes with an agenda for theorization and research for future practice in postcolonial contexts. The volume is relevant to researchers, practitioners, and students in psychology, anthropology, sociology, public health, development studies, social work, urban studies, and women’s and gender studies across global contexts.
