The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) near Darmstadt, Germany, has been under construction since 2012. One of the world’s most complex structures for cutting-edge research, it features a ring accelerator with a circumference of 1.1 km (0.68 miles) and 14 adjoining research buildings with laboratories, workshops, cooling systems, energy supply, and a high-performance computing centre. FAIR will supply matter of unprecedented density and temperature, and accelerate particles to nearly the speed of light, enabling vital research into matter and states that do not occur naturally on Earth. The architecture of this mega-project was designed by ion42, a joint venture between German architecture firms DGI Bauwerk (Berlin) and schneider+schumacher (Frankfurt am Main).Form Follows Beam provides deep insights into the genesis and execution of this extraordinary and spectacular architectural task, lavishly illustrated with plans, drawings and sketches, visualisations, and photographs. In conversation, architects and engineers speak about the evolution facility’s shape and why careful architectural and landscape design is essential even for a facility so strongly determined by technical requirements. Supplementary essays explain how FAIR works and what is being researched in it, and what makes Darmstadt its ideal location.

The Open Call in Flanders (the Dutch-speaking, northern part of Belgium) is more than just another architecture competition: any governmental agency or public institution can choose to work with an Open Call for any given construction project. Since its invention by the first Flemish Government Architect bOb Van Reeth in 2000, more than 700 assignments have been published in this procedure, resulting in almost 350 completed public architectural and infrastructural projects so far. This volume compiles 70 of these, from all over Flanders—from its west coast to the Dutch border in the east—to illustrate the astounding quality of these projects. They prove that public architecture can be daring, thought-provoking, cooperative, and well-done at the same time. The book takes an extensive look at how this procedure works, how it is received by architects, politicians, and clients—and ultimately, at the outstanding public architecture in Flanders as an example for other countries to study closely. Including buildings by 51N4E, Bovenbouw Architectuur, Compagnie O, Dierendonckblancke, KAAN, Ney & Partners, noAarchitecten, NU architectuuratelier, OFFICE Kersten Geers David Van Severen, RCR Arquitectes, Robbrecht en Daem, Sergison Bates, Eduardo Souto de Moura, Xaveer de Geyter, Zaha Hadid, among others

Convents are revived as kindergartens, and an old prison receives a second life as a law school. In Flanders, daring transformations of existing architecture are raising the bar on adaptive reuse. Historical structures are adapted to the current needs of their users and given new functions thanks to meticulous renovations and innovative extensions. Contemporary Flemish architecture stands out with its creative conversions. This book documents outstanding examples of adaptive reuse across the Flanders region of northern Belgium. It presents a portrait of Flanders' amazingly vibrant adaptive architecture with 24 bold and pragmatic projects by De Vylder Vinck Taillieu, Noaa Architecten, Blaf, Korteknie Stuhlmacher, Atelier Kempe Thill, Zaha Hadid and many other architectural studios.

Eckhard Gerber and the Gerber Architekten firm he founded are among the most renowned representatives of German architecture. For six decades, he and his team have realized a large number of public and private buildings that meet the highest architectural standards with their conceptual clarity. The third volume of the Baukunst series once again showcases the firm's broad spectrum. The projects from 2016-2026 range from corporate headquarters and business parks to student residences, residential and hotel complexes, research laboratories and institutes, and conversions of valuable existing buildings. Since the construction of the King Fahad National Library in Riyadh 15 years ago, Gerber Architects has also made a name for itself internationally. This is evident in projects in China and on the Arabian Peninsula, including a museum, a subway station, a science center, and the spectacular large-scale project of King Salman Park in Riyadh. When completed, King Salman Park will not only be the largest urban park in the world, but also a symbol of Saudi Arabia's post-fossil fuel transition – and an extraordinary research project on how to create an oasis world as a new city center in an arid climate. Third volume in the Baukunst series marking the 60th anniversary of Gerber ArchitektenOpulent display of 17 selected projects and a detailed interview with Eckhard GerberInsights into the large-scale King Salman Park project and the post-fossil fuel transition in Saudi Arabia
