This open access book examines how TV professionals in Germany have negotiated “quality TV drama” from 2015 to the present. As practitioners have adapted quality TV – a term most strongly associated with US series – to their own national context, they have simultaneously dealt with shifts in screenwriting and storytelling as well as with broader transformations of the local television industry. As in other European countries, in Germany this has included a crucial upheaval: the emergence of various streaming services, which has multiplied the television market. As a systematic study of this changing fiction industry, Television Drama from Germany will be of great interest to both academics and practitioners working both within and outside the German-language television market.

Das Teen TV boomt. Aktuelle Jugendserien auf Streaming-Plattformen sind dafür ein klares Indiz, haben in der deutschsprachigen Medienwissenschaft bislang aber kaum Beachtung gefunden. Dieser Sammelband führt grundlegend in das serielle Teen TV ein und nimmt zentrale Fallbeispiele in den Blick, von 13 Reasons Why bis zu DRUCK, der deutschen Adaption des norwegischen Transmedia-Jugenddramas SKAM. Neben den Inhalten und der Ästhetik der seriellen Jugendnarrationen geht es um ihre Rezeption und um Produktionskontexte.

Der Sammelband verschafft somit einen Überblick über die Bandbreite interdisziplinärer Ansätze des Forschungsfeldes und veranschaulicht das Erkenntnispotential der aktuellen Drehbuchforschung.

Dabei ist die zentrale Hypothese, dass diese Praktiker das Qualitätsfernsehen, das am stärksten mit dem Serien-Drama aus den USA assoziiert wird, in einen nationalen Kontext übertragen und gleichzeitig dieses Konzept mit breiteren, jüngeren Transformationen des Fernsehens und der lokalen Fernsehindustrie verbinden.

This anthology provides a fundamental introduction to serial teen TV and takes a look at central case studies, from 13 Reasons Why to DRUCK, the German adaptation of the Norwegian transmedia youth drama SKAM. In addition to the content and aesthetics of serial teen narratives, it looks at their reception and production contexts.

Der Sammelband untersucht das Verhältnis von Klasse – einer nicht nur ökonomischen, sondern auch kulturellen und politischen Kategorie – und dem Fernsehen in seinen gegenwärtigen hybriden Formen vor allem aus vier Perspektiven: Erstens geht es um Klassenfragen im Fernsehen, auf der Ebene der Repräsentation, zweitens um Klassenfragen des Fernsehens auf der Seite der Produktion. Hier ist zum Beispiel zu analysieren, welche Klassen welches Fernsehen (für welche Klassen) entwickelt und herstellt. Unter drittens Klassenfragen beim Fernsehen fallen Beiträge, die sich auf die Seite der Rezeption fokussieren und zum Beispiel die Lesarten zu spezifischen Klassendarstellungen beleuchten. Viertens nimmt der Band Klassenfragen der Fernsehwissenschaft in den Blick und reflektiert in diesem Zusammenhang ihre Lücken und ihre Prägung durch Klassenzugehörigkeit.
