This textbook provides a full treatment of Linear Algebra devoted to undergraduate and graduate physics students. Although the mathematical level is similar to the corresponding mathematical textbooks in regard to definitions, propositions and proofs, it adopts a language and approach more attuned to the reader’s familiarity with physics lectures and physics textbooks. A distinctive feature is the emphasis placed on the significance of bases within a vector space. As a result, students gain a deeper understanding of how vector indices, despite their abundance, serve not as enemies but as friends since they give additional information about the mathematical objects being used, and facilitate access to tensor formalism.

The book offers numerous worked examples and exercises with solution hints to deepen this knowledge.

Er behandelt Quantenfeldtheorie von skalaren Feldern, Eichbosonen und Fermionen - überwiegend in kanonischer Quantisierung - und ihre Anwendungen auf wichtige elektromagnetische und schwache Prozesse. Die Methode der Feynman-Graphen wird durch viele Beispiele aus der Quantenelektrodynamik und der schwachen Wechselwirkung illustriert, die bis zu den Observablen (Streuquerschnitte oder Zerfallswahrscheinlichkeiten) durchgeführt sind. Das Prinzip der Regularisierung und Renormierung wird ebenso beschrieben wie die physikalische Bedeutung der wichtigsten Strahlungskorrekturen. Electroweak and Strong Interaction: Phenomenology, Concepts, Models, begins with relativistic quantum mechanics and some quantum field theory which lay the foundation for the rest of the text. The phenomenology and the physics of the fundamental interactions are emphasized through a detailed discussion of the empirical fundamentals of unified theories of strong, electromagnetic, and weak interactions. The principles of local gauge theories are described both in a heuristic and a geometric framework. The minimal standard model of the fundamental interactions is developed in detail and characteristic applications are worked out. Possible signals of physics beyond that model, notably in the physics of neutrinos are also discussed. Among the applications scattering on nucleons and on nuclei provide salient examples. Numerous exercises with solutions make the text suitable for advanced courses or individual study. This completely updated revised new edition contains an enlarged chapter on quantum chromodynamics and a widely updated chapter on neutrino physics.

The book describes Maxwell''s equations first in their integral, directly testable form, then moves on to their local formulation. The first two chapters cover all essential properties of Maxwell''s equations, including their symmetries and their covariance in a modern notation. Chapter 3 is devoted to Maxwell theory as a classical field theory and to solutions of the wave equation. Chapter 4 deals with important applications of Maxwell theory. It includes topical subjects such as metamaterials with negative refraction index and solutions of Helmholtz'' equation in paraxial approximation relevant for the description of laser beams.

Chapter 5 describes non-Abelian gauge theories from a classical, geometric point of view, in analogy to Maxwell theory as a prototype, and culminates in an application to the U(2) theory relevant for electroweak interactions. The last chapter 6 gives a concise summary of semi-Riemannian geometry as the framework for the classical field theory of gravitation. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the Schwarzschild solution of Einstein''s equations and the classical tests of general relativity (perihelion precession of Mercury, and light deflection by the sun).
