Nel 1881, colpito da una malattia agli occhi, Francesco De Sanctis comincio a dettare alla nipote Agnese le sue memorie. L''opera venne interrotta per portare avanti lo "Studio su Leopardi" (uscito anch''esso postumo), e non fu piu ripresa per la morte dell''autore sopraggiunta nel 1883. L''opera rimase pertanto incompiuta non soltanto nell''estensione cronologica --si ferma al 1844-- ma anche nella rielaborazione stilistica.
