Franz Hessel was an observer par excellence of the increasingly hectic metropolis that was Berlin in the late 1920s. Hessel fut l’un des premiers à voir dans la grande ville une énigme, un univers de signes à déchiffrer. Il a fait de la flânerie philosophique un véritable genre littéraire et sut mieux que tout autre traquer « la lumière moderne de l’insolite ». Promenades dans Berlin retrace cette fréquentation quotidienne des rues, la capacité de lire les enseignes, les affiches comme les pages d’un livre, d’entrevoir dans les détails architecturaux, les visages et les propos des passants, autant de symboles et d’allégories.
