Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Leipzig, language: English, abstract: Lewis Jones once wrote in the Telegraph about Paul Auster that "e;his novels are labyrinths of enigmas, mysteries and riddles, thrillers with no endings, detective stories as told by Samuel Beckett, their premises endlessly shifting, in which the only knowledge is that nothing is, or can be, known."e;. These qualities are also represented in his New York Trilogy published in 1987, that consists of the three detective stories City of Glass, Ghosts, and The Locked Room, which are set in New York. All of them deal with the nature of identity and attach value to these mysteries and riddles typical of Paul Auster, for example by using symbols and metaphors# to cause certain reactions in the reader. Especially the postmodern novel City of Glass from 1985 makes use of numerous symbols and metaphors that can be found throughout the whole novel. In this way, many passages or even single sentences can be interpreted differently and consequently it is sometimes difficult for the reader not to be confused. By using the single symbols and metaphors of the title, of glass as symbol of pairs and look-alikes, the crisis of identity, and the Tower of Babel in his novel City of Glass, Paul Auster influences the reader and causes different effects, such as catching his interest, confusing him, or giving him a reason for thinking. In the following I am going to analyze the single symbols and metaphors and try to interpret the effects on the reader and the author's intentions.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 2,3, University of Leipzig (Philologische Fakultat), language: English, abstract: AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to draw a comparison between the Cherokee Nation of the United States and the Aborigines of Australia concerning their economic development. Even though the Cherokee Nation and the Australian Aborigines share similar historical backgrounds with regard to a long lasting mistreatment by their prevailing governments, the Cherokee Nation, in contrast to the Australian Aborigines, has been and continues to experience a more successful economic development. This paper analyzes the reasons underlying this contrast. For that, the historical background of the Australian Aborigines and the Cherokee Nation is examined and compared. Since both of them were mistreated by their prevailing governments, their historical backgrounds are compared and the consequences of the mistreatment are applied to their contemporary economic situations. After that, the contemporary economic situations of the two peoples are compared, whereat the distinction between the Cherokee Nation s economic success and the Aborigine s economic failure becomes apparent. Finally, the reasons for the different economic development are investigated and in how far the affected peoples or even their governments, as in the case of the Australian Aborigines, are responsible for this difference. The results will be revealed and discussed.

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Management Styles, grade: 1,0, AKAD University of Applied Sciences Leipzig, language: English, abstract: Especially in crises, companies need leaders to help them asserting themselves on themarkets and getting them through difficult times. However, not every leader alwayscomes to a satisfying result, since there might be a mismatch between the company ssituation and the attitudes and practices of its leader. As a result, the style of leadershipplays a decisive role concerning a company s achievements in the majority of cases. Since the style of leadership might be the critical factor when it comes to thesuccess of a business, scientists have analyzed several leadership styles, which all havedifferent characteristics and therewith also varying effects on the respective companies. Two of the most common styles are the charismatic and the transformational leadership. As their names already indicate, each of these styles has its own characteristic featuresthat affect the surroundings in a variety of ways. But as different as these two leadershipstyles might seem, they also have similarities based in their principles and attitudes. Since the opinions among scientists partly seem to be divided concerning theresemblance of the two styles on the one hand and the diversity on the other hand, thispaper consequently deals with the task to expose the differences and similaritiesbetween charismatic and transformational leadership. First, in Chapter 2 Leadership in general a short definition of leadership ingeneral is given, for describing the universal understanding of leadership and itscomponents. For being able to highlight the corresponding differences and similaritiesbetween the two special leadership styles that have to be examined, Chapter 3Charismatic Leadership and Chapter 4 Transformational Leadership analyze thecharacteristics as well as the components of charismatic and transformational leadershipin order to get a better understanding of their basic attributes. The following Chapter 5Differences between Charismatic and Transformational Leadership shows the maindistinctions between these two leadership styles, based on the perceptions of theprevious chapters. Chapter 6 Similarities between Charismatic and TransformationalLeadership underlines on the other side the general similarities and parallels betweenthe two. Chapter 7 Resume finally summarizes the results and concludes the paper.
